A blaze began at 2 30 this morning sweeping through Chicago's downtown district and raging beyond control from the Board of Trade through surrounding blocks. Fire crews battled the flames as vital commerce faced disruption and families were forced to flee structures. Authorities investigated the fire's cause while assessing damage to nearby offices and facilities.
A 12 story fire swept the board of trade building at La Salle and Van Turen streets in New Victoria area. The Kaiserhoff and New Victoria hotels and adjoining buildings were threatened as flames spread to their rear sections. Nearly 4000 guests were awakened and evacuated from the Kaiserhoff and New Victoria hotels. Fire crews from downtown and nearby districts responded quickly and fought the blaze until the roof collapse and flare up subsided, with control believed by 2:15 AM.
Colonel Henry Watterson of the Louisville Courier-Journal urged support for general arbitration treaties with Great Britain and France at Convention Hall Kansas City. He argued recognition of arbitration would spark a world move toward peace and warned the United States to seize the opportunity. Resolutions were adopted urging Senate ratification.
Morning Journal report details a Kansas City incident where three people died and eight were injured in a trolley crash near Wolcott Kansas. Lafayette Ind December 18 John W Poole convicted of murder in the first degree for the killing of farm hand Joseph Kemper. Kemper disappeared in 1909 and was believed dead until Emery Poole, his son, led authorities to a buried body in a cornfield on the Poole farm. Life imprisonment ordered.
New York report says Dr. Charles H Mayo of Rochester Minnesota recovered from the shock of his appendicitis operation. The surgeon appeared on the road to rapid recovery or so reports indicate. Cornelius Vanderbilt likewise recovering satisfactorily from an appendicitis operation tonight.
Rear Admiral BR Nicholson will assume command of the Asiatic fleet on April 1 as Rear Admiral Murdock completes his two year term. Nicholson will succeed as chief of the navigation bureau on January 1 as Commander Phillip Andrews is confirmed by the Senate.
Westinghouse Air Brake Co. requested receivers for the Wabash Railway in US circuit court. Judge Adams appointed Frederick J. Delano Edward B Pryor and W K Bixby as receivers with bonds at 200000 each. The road needs 9750000 for immediate car and equipment needs and covers 514 miles of track.
Twelve killed and more seriously injured when a Silk Train running as a special crashes into the rear of the Columbian Flyer near St Paul. Police and railway officials survey the wreck as rescue teams work through the night.

Ortie E B Mc Manigal delays departure for Indianapolis to testify in the federal dynamite conspiracy case. He will stay in Los Angeles for at least a week to allow cross inquiry of Pacific coast labor leaders. Principal witnesses expected include Olaf Tveitmoe and A T Chancey with Chancey in poor health and Tveitmoe ready to disclose all. Captain W. H. H. Chapman of Company P Twentieth Infantry died of nephritis at Fort Douglas Salt Lake City December 18. He entered service in 1891 after graduating from West Point. His widow is a daughter of General William H. McKaskey, retired. Chapman was 44.
Former Speaker Cannon questioned costs per squirrel or per flea in eradicating bubonic plague. Assistant Secretary Robert Bailey said California spends $23,600 monthly to fight ground squirrels carrying fleas, with over $1,060,000 spent since 1907 and 5,000 infected squirrels found. California counties offer limited aid while state help is minimal.
Chicago December 18 two more jurors were added to try ten Chicago meat packers indicted under the Sherman act in the U S district court. By adjournment nine jurors were accepted with challenges continuing as veniremen were excused and the panel incomplete for continuation tomorrow morning.
Seven indictments charging five Chinese individuals with bribing and conspiring to bribe three immigration officers were returned by the federal grand jury in Los Angeles. The arrests occurred near San Diego and the accused expressed indignation at not having their money returned.
Washington December 18 Joseph B Cotton former attorney for the Duluth Missabe and Northern railroad denied before the house steel trust investigating committee the charge that he ordered padding of the railroad cost in a report to the Minnesota railroad and warehouse commission He called Mart s testimony false and offered documents to show cost estimates were not submitted to the commission Representatives Young and Gardner said they were convinced Cotton did nothing questionable The committee discussed Merritt Drothers talk of railroad and ore properties in the Missabe area involving John D Rockefeller and F D Gates The Rev Gates fate as minister was questioned by Chairman Stanley Cotton agreed Gates had not held a pulpit in twenty five years
In St. Louis near Union Station a taxicab struck a northbound Eighteenth street car after midnight causing a crash that left fifteen injured. Detective William Pullem sustained possibly fatal injuries. chauffeur John Tucker cited a brick attack earlier. Police reported attacks on non union drivers amid a strike.
