Rail executive notes profitless branch lines and high costs
W. Kendrick of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railway testified in the Missouri State case that except for a few Minnesota branches no local rail line earns profit when interstate traffic is excluded. He said minimum passenger fares would need to be about 2.99 cents per mile to earn a profit and that it costs sixty cents to move a high speed interstate train from start to full speed. He added interstate business is cheaper to handle than state business, with state work costing 50 to 100 percent more.
