Tepic garrison forces led by General Moya launch an eastward offensive toward the rebels stronghold in Guadalajara. Two thousand troops from the west pursue rebels toward the Nayarit frontier as plans for a major battle intensify.
Bigdee Ariz December 17 clash feared as 20 to 40 miles south of Nueco Sonora rebels gather near the international boundary. A federal regiment left Naco to engage the force while the line at Naco was closed. Rebels linked to Pancho Villa remnants may join Betrada's side. A trainload of Mexican federal troops arrived at Saco to help garrison the city.
Advices received by the Mexican consulate report that the revolutionaries in Oaxaca have split. General Maycotte has rebelled with part of the rebel forces, ignoring de la Huerta as leader and protesting against the co operatist party. The division concerns who will head the rebels' new government.
Washington Dec 17 All immigration would be suspended until 1929 under a bill introduced today by Representative Watkins Democrat Oregon. The measure proposes a halt to immigration amid calls for national policy reevaluation.
Denver and New Mexico expect fair conditions in the north and unsettled weather in the south on Tuesday with a change to fair by Wednesday. Arizona trends toward generally fair weather Tuesday and Wednesday with little temperature variation.

De la Huerta officials deny port closures Vera Cruz Veracruz and Acapulco rumors and say New Orleans official documents are valid. Governor Laurens says 1560 railway workers and laborers in Yucatan join the revolt and US diplomatic ties may influence belligerent recognition. Fall of Puebla and Cuautla Morelos is confirmed as tacit recognition by the United States.
In Santa Fe New Mexico a conference of county sheriffs treasurers clerks assessors and commissioners convened to discuss the Comptroller act provisions. About 150 officials attended with Governor Hinkle welcoming. Sessions include budget making notes and forthcoming sectional meetings led by state officials.
Thomas Lee Woolwine Los Angeles attorney reported improving slowly after failing health in Paria with emphasis on cautious recovery and ongoing medical care from local sources dating December 17.
The city of Tulcan, population about 4,000, was destroyed by a violent earthquake felt as far as Tharra. Northern Military Section reports detachments sent to protect the ruin from pillage after the quake toppled the principal church and damaged hotels. At Cuayaquil a Sunday dispatch said Tulcan was violently shaken and 27 bodies were recovered.
Dr. C. Merriam is named the first full time county health officer for Colfax county taking office at the start of the year. He previously worked with the state board of health in Arkansas running child health clinics and with the U S Veterans Bureau in Tennessee overseeing health service for trainees and families. He has about 4960 persons under his care and is a graduate of the Atlanta School of Physicians and Surgeons.
Washington reports James A. Logan says ID. Young and Charles G. Dawes will join the commissions' committee investigating the German budget. A third American may be chosen for a second committee on German capital abroad. State Department notes both men are very competent and will work in private capacity, not as government representatives.
Washington December 17 Department of Agriculture final estimates set the value of the nation's principal farm crops this year at 8 322 695 000 dollars. Updated figures compare with 7 449 804 000 in the previous year and 5 629 548 000 in 1921. Acreage totals and production figures are given for corn and winter wheat among others.
The Board of Education accepted Angelo Zucco's plans for a two story nine room University Heights School to house 360 pupils. Bids will target brick or brick with stucco, tile roof, fireproof design. A second meeting will finalize specifications after Toula McRae returns. The district will relocate a Second Ward dwelling and remodel it for Manual Training under T J Benton with profits aiding the High School Athletic Association.
The diplomatic corps in Pekin declares no role in allocating surplus Chinese customs funds between Canton and Pekin, citing no existing agreement authorizing such distribution. It rejects Sun Yat Sen's claim of a 1999 precedent as a purely Chinese arrangement with no mediation role by outsiders.
Washington reports 26 535 miles of federal aid highways completed by end of the fiscal year, with 8 820 finished in the last year. The census shows 2 859 575 rural miles nation wide, 14 772 miles under construction, and 6 317 completed in approved projects as states certify totals.
Washington December 17 Estab lishment of 1 000 000 000 credit for Germany to purchase food is asked in a bill introduced today by Representative Berger a socialist from Wisconsin.
Milwaukee report states F Ray Tompkins held on first degree murder charge was found insane by a lunacy commission of five alienists. Tompkins confessed to killing his wife whose headless body was found December 6 and said he strangled her and burned the head in a furnace fire.
Walter R. Loupe, once a Colorado minister, pleaded guilty to embezzling $600 from Farmers Life Insurance. He confessed to planning his own death by driving into the Colorado river near Glenwood Springs, then fleeing to Michigan. He was sentenced to two to five years in the state penitentiary.
A Denver grand jury indicted Frank Newton Briges, former president of Interstate Bank and Trust, on three counts of embezzlement, abstraction and misapplication of funds tied to a 1921 check and loan collateral. Briges, now in Los Angeles real estate, reportedly heads toward Denver to answer the charges.
Senator Johnson of California will appear on the South Dakota Republican ballot in the Independent column after a court ruling about ballot placement. Senator Norbeck supports the decision and says it gives Johnson a preferred position with allied candidates.
London reports women exaggerating ages to vote, reflecting political beliefs that women gain voting rights at 80 while men require 21. Since 1914 the registered voters rose from 8 million to over 20.9 million, with women sometimes outnumbering men in several districts.
In Santa Fe a habeas corpus writ for John Looney, sought in Illinois for Dyer Act violations, was granted. Judge Phillips scheduled a return at 8 tomorrow morning, and Governor Hinkle fixed 10 o'clock tomorrow for the extradition hearing requested by Illinois.
Clovis New Mexico Special to the Journal reports Palm and his wife were rushed from Taiban to a focal hospital with ptomaine poisoning. Mrs Palm died Sunday while Mr Palm remained in critical condition. Three children aged two four and six survived. Palm, principal of the Taiban schools, blamed English walnuts for the poisoning and said they had not eaten canned goods. The family formerly lived in Portales.
William Gibbs McAdoo former wartime director general of the American railroads announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in a telegram to W. W. Howes the Democratic state chairman. The formal acceptance of the party platform was already in the mails to Pierre South Dakota.
The county bond election will be held Saturday in Berna Lillo County. About 8 060 people are eligible to vote if they paid a property tax in the prior year. Eligible voters include qualified electors who paid taxes on real or personal property and even goods, animals, autos or furniture. wives on community property may vote if taxes were paid. Those who own property but did not pay taxes in the past year are ineligible.
Santa Fe reports State School Auditor J. J. Owens says the future of Socorro County schools hinges on residents paying 1923 taxes in advance amid cash shortages from reassessment and tax delinquency. He urges a strong arrears collection drive as outstanding warrants total $44,960, risking school closures and a lost school year.
Chicago December 17 Walter Eckersall a western conference football official was selected to referee the Haskell Indians versus Olympic club eleven of San Francisco in Los Angeles Christmas day.
Governor Hinkle issued a requisition for J. E. Nelson who faces a justice of the peace complaint in Curry county alleging forgery of a $2,000 promissory note signed by Mrs. Fr A Nelson and Worth Nelson Nelson was reported under arrest in Eastland county Texas and the state seeks his return for prosecution
Two inmates Paul Rand and Albert J. Green seized Governor Sweet’s official car at Canon City. After a high speed escape and a wreck, they fled on foot but were captured by a sheriff’s posse. Green was wounded in the leg and Rand in the arm during the pursuit.
The Senate kept a deadlock on an Interstate Commerce Committee chairmanship after five ballots. Support shifted toward Senator Smith of South Carolina as insurgents backed him, while Cummins Smith and Couzens held votes. The House finished its reorganization and set committees, with debates on rules and tax policy and plans for a holiday recess through January.
