Gabriel Narutowicz, Poland's first president, dies minutes after being shot in the back by unknown assailant. The attack occurred shortly after he took office, shocking the nation and triggering fears of political instability in the republic.
Constantinople December 16 The American destroyer Bainbridge rescued 400 people from the burning French hospital ship Vinh Long in the Sea of Marmora off San Stefano. Fifteen aboard were miceine, five missing believed killed by explosions. The ship was en route to Constantinople from Bigart when fire broke out in the magazine. Submarine chaser 86 assisted in rescuing those who jumped overboard.
Reports from Warcaw dated December 16 state first president of the Polish republic, Ai Narutowicz, was assassinated at an art exhibition. The gunman Neiwadomski was captured and beaten, and the cabinet debated the next steps as Speaker Maciel Rataj prepared to assume the presidency and call a national assembly for a successor.
Rome reports a deep impression at the Vatican on the assassination of President Narutowicz. Pope Pius IX, who had visited Poland before his election, meets Narutowicz with notably favorable recollections.
Chicago announces the purchase of Nick Ivtrevich, a left handed pitcher from Los Angeles. The Cubs will send five players and money in a deal not disclosed. Four of the imports are named: Walter Galvin George Saisel Marty Krug and Percy Jones.
San Francisco Cal Dee 16 A federal judge sentenced Joy Wilmot former prohibition agent to five years in Leavenworth and a $200 fine for bribery. Prosecution perjury admissions by defense witnesses are under investigation by the federal grand jury.
Columbus December 16 Miss Florence Allen of Cleveland was sworn in as associate justice of the Ohio Supreme Court after the November election She is said to be the first woman in the world to sit as a judge on such a court in historic achievement by the state court system.
Denver dispatch reports unsettled conditions across New Mexico with a moderate cold wave east of the mountains and snow northeast portion. Arizona forecast calls for unsettled weather Sunday and Monday with probable snow in the north and little temperature change.
Conditions for the twenty four hours ended at 6 p m yesterday recorded by the university show a high temperature around 80, a low near 40, and a partly cloudy day with variable humidity and light wind from the southwest.
Advocates press for immediate action on farm relief as Norris moves to shelve the administration shipping bill in favor of the Norris bill creating a government capitalized farm products buyer and seller. Jones vows to push the shipping measure next week amid expected bitter debate and Democratic-Republican support for farm aid. Brookhart cites a poll showing a majority favor replacing the shipping bill with farm credit legislation.
Washington reports a restraint in official comment on American aid to resolve the German reparations deadlock. A Paris dispatch said Premier Poincare discussed intervention, but White House officials stressed the informal approach is not ready for public stage. Lexington Ky Dec 16 The roundup of the Ballard gang aiding moonshine war ends with the capture of Charles Pallard in Path county by Sheriff Pen Wells. Pallard, weakened by exposure and bullet wounds, offered little resistance. Earlier, Robert Ballard died in Menifee county cabin siege, and authorities captured Pallard’s father and another brother along with three allied members. Three federal prohibition agents were killed in battles during the conflict.
Government officials announce a Hutterite colony will move from North Dakota to land in Manitoba once held by Mennonites. Some are already there. They were excluded during World War I for military service opposition but are said to accept school laws that caused earlier conflicts.
Chicago December 186. Bonuses of 100 dollars for every baby born in an employee family and cash gifts for employees who marry were announced today by S. W. Straus and Company mortgage brokers as part of this year's employee welfare appropriation.
Washington reports the house failed to strike a disarmament provision in the navy budget, voting 251 to 0 on the point of order. Debate continued on personnel cuts and age enlistment limits, with Hull backing deeper navy cuts and Connelly opposing enlistment below 17.

New York December 16. Prohibition director B C Yellowley to use injunctions against 300 cafe and cabaret owners already convicted of liquor violations. Agents to list offenders’ names and addresses and jail those arrested, with police to set bail or hold them for arraignment.
New York on December 16 a New York nursery doctor said infant deaths in the United States exceed the total soldiers killed in all American wars. Dr Henry Painter urged a national plan for birth and infancy conditions noting that the business of being a baby is the most hazardous occupation and clergymen live fourteen times longer than infants.
Deming New Mexico December 15 The Florida Oil company reports progress at its well six miles northwest of Deming. Depth reached 410 feet. Star rig operating two shifts per day. Expect to strike oil before 2000 feet.
A mild influenza outbreak affects the battleship Florida and has spread to other ships at the Boston navy yard. Thirty cases are listed on the Florida, with sixteen sent to the nearby naval hospital.
Portales New Mexico reports the Bradley yams began car lot shipments by the Portales Valley Sweet Potato Growers association. Two cars were loaded this week, one on Friday and one on Saturday.
Francis J. Wood for Richard Guest urged removal of the case after a preliminary hearing before Justice George Roddy. Guest was bound over to the grand jury on a 2500 bond and later released on a writ of habeas corpus with a new district court hearing set for Tuesday at 9. Assistant DA Mabry said he favors a jury and would not consent to a trial without one.
Santa Fe December 16 Prisoners at the estate penitentiary showed a 27 percent rise in their numbers for the year ending November 30 with an average of 399. The warden Pla cido Jaramillo attributes the gain to more federal prisoners. He defends his line of action after guards fired on inmates in July during a food strike and mentions the board’s recommendation for his removal.

Residents of Pullman received checks totaling 6908.14 from funds saved by C. J. Holland, former bank president, after the Fernwood Trust and Savings Bank failure in 1914. The liquidation committee closed work in 1917 and Holland vowed to cover the shortfall, wiping the debt today.

Lord Marcus De Ya Poer Sersford, famed horse expert and former manager of the late King Edward training stable, was discovered dead in his London bed at age 74. The death was reported today with no immediate cause given.
