A suspension bridge across Elk river in Charleston West Virginia collapsed sending six teams and several pedestrians into the icy water. Three youths Ma mie Higginbotstam 11 Annie Humphreys 17 Ollie Gibbs 15 died. Injured include Zella Smith 17 William Holmes Henry Fielder Elma Tucker 13. The 850 foot span built in 1852 had long been unsafe with cables slipping from moorings.
