Augusta Ga December 13 It was learned today that New York interests swindled banks there with fictitious cotton warehouse receipts claiming Augusta storage Several hundred bales of cotton were alleged stored with the Savannah valley warehouse on a Central of Georgia spur which Augusta merchants say does not exist in fact The schemes involve leading cotton houses in this city and the fraud was detected locally
The Ohio Brewers association launched a campaign to reform saloons in Cleveland. No beer will be sold to dive keepers and Sunday closing will be enforced where law permits. The reform committee will operate from Dayton with detectives to target undesirable places, in cooperation with the Anti-Saloon League.
In a report to the appellate division Referee Stover urged that charges against Justice Joseph M. Duell be quashed. District Attorney Jerome and Robert J. Collier had argued he was unfit for the bench of the court of special sessions. The report notes Duell’s earlier associations with Town Topics editor Colonel Mann and finds no interference with his duties as a justice.
Mich ael Ohtura a Macedonian is near death after a Thursday assault at the Grand Trunk yards. He was left unattended until tonight with multiple wounds including a severed leg bone. Police have detained a Macedonian suspect but victims friends refuse to cooperate citing fear of retaliation.
William Bhisa longtime president of the Houston and Albany railway for twenty five years died at his Boston home this morning. He led the line through many milestones and was a prominent figure in transportation circles.
Four people were injured and twenty nine horses perished when a fire struck the Cook Brewing bottling plant at Twenty sixth street and Cottage Grove avenue in Chicago. The building was destroyed with losses estimated at 200000 dollars and many families were forced from their homes.
New Britain Connecticut December 13 Treasurer Stanley of the Savings Bank of New Britain said he had received no word about reports that William F Walker the defaulter had been arrested and he did not place much credence in the report.
A telegram from Concheno Mexico reports Scott White paymaster for the Cirens mines killed three men in a dining hall outbreak Americans were dining when Mexicans entered, were ejected, doors barred and the first three to enter the threshold were killed. Conlen denies White’s arrest and says he was only a witness awaiting investigation.
Washington bulletin from the White House reports Mrs Longworth had a very good day. She is progressing rapidly and her condition is entirely satisfactory.
Jefferson City Missouri December 18 The J Burns Shoe Manufacturing Company assigns for creditors assets listed at 90000 liabilities 160000. The plant is released to a Saint Louis firm which will operate it.
Francis E. Leupp, commissioner of Indian affairs, urged intermarriage of whites and Indians at the Patria club. He claimed government efforts at education produced excellent Indian women as wives for white men and said the two races were merging as officials encourage whites to live among Indians.
A Geneva police find in a post office to New York a notice from the Geneva section of the Union of Russian People announcing that Louis Miller editor of the Warheit Journal has been condemned to death for publishing secret government documents. The notice cites three specialists to carry out the execution and ties the act to actions against a revolutionist named Scehernak.
In Carralton Alabama white citizens stood guard at the church and county jail after reports a mob planned to seize a Black man accused of inciting trouble. Twenty four Black detainees faced preliminary trials with twelve held for further inquiry and twelve released. In Paris, Governor General Jonuary of Algeria reports operations against the Bennis Nassen tribesmen have begun and show signs of submission.
The Cunard liner Mauretania ran aground tonight in the Mersey opposite the landing stage. It is expected she will be floated off in the morning ahead of her scheduled sailing to New York.
Goldfield Nevada December 13 Secretary Eric of the Goldfield Mine Owners association says the executive board voted to suspend the recently adopted wax scale for ten days at the request of the American Federation of Labor. A joint AFL committee and the owners will draft a new wage scale, affecting Power Company workers who walked out and carpenters and engineers in the mines.
Delegations from Goldfield groups plan to ask General Funston to keep troops stationed until danger passes. Reports describe fears of violence between mine owners and miners and possible patrols by regulars.
