Kings Who Are Hard Up and Royal Debts in Portugal

A discussion of royal finances notes King Carlos of Portugal and King Manuel. Since 1890 the crown received 220000 pounds in advances, with 36000 remaining credit and 184000 still owed. The new civil list showed no income for the royal house until parliament granted Manuel an income of 200 pounds a day. Rumors linked Carlos's murder to state bankruptcy from extravagance, and a single debt to one man was reported as over 100000 pounds.

Fleet to station on Pacific as docks added demand

Special Spokane report quotes Rep W E Humphrey arguing for $2 9 million for two dry docks and more facilities to project a permanent Pacific fleet. He links dock expansion to stronger merchant marine and reduced need for foreign transports in war. The piece also covers Roosevelt country life commission sessions in Spokane and regional agricultural growth with 3 000 000 fruit trees planted for a 60 000 000 bushel apple crop forecast in 1912. Spokane boys Borleske and Pinkham named to All Northwest football team.
