Hundred thousand dollars offered by Colorado Capital proves irresistible to national committeemen as Democrats convene in Denver on July 1 to discuss strategy and fundraising.
The Democratic National Committee debated accepting Denver’s 100000 payment for the 1908 convention site and operations. After a long session, the Clayton resolution to refuse funds not needed was laid on the table by 31 to 14 with lawmakers and governors pressing for or against the offer.
Democratic National Committee delegates vote to choose Denver as the convention city with 22 votes over Louisville and Chicago. After Denver wins, July 7 is set for the convention date with a plan to coordinate press arrangements.
Denver greets the AP notice that the next national Democratic convention will be held in the city. CM Day reports a grand reception and promises a completed auditorium by April with $100,000 backing from local leaders and civic groups. The convention hall will seat 14,000 with room for 14,000 more.
Lincoln Neb Dec 12 Bryan expressed satisfaction on the convention date and said the committee would select delegates with care. He added he took no part in the canvass for the convention city and believed Denver would be a delightful host once the date is set.
Georgetown Kentucky Dee 32. In the Caleb Powers Case today the cross examination of Henry Be Youteey was concluded and the prosecution closed its case. The defense will open tomorrow with a statement of its case by Attorney Sinise.
Chihuahua Mexico December 12 Acting Governor Ranches commutes the death sentences of Dr Harte William Mitchell and Richard Eon to twenty years in the penitentiary the action reported from the state capital.
Herman Henz, who crafted nearly indistinguishable silver half dollars by melting Mexican pesos, was sentenced to six years in Sing Sing and fined $250. He claimed the proceeds financed an airship and cited Manhattan-area cottage operations before his Suffolk New York churchyard discovery.
Morning Journal Special Leased Wire reports a bill introduced by Mr. Clayton of Alabama to bar circuit and district courts from issuing injunctions against state laws except after final judgment that finds the law violates the Constitution laws or treaties. The measure also limits injunctions against state officers unless a final ruling declares the law unconstitutional.
Washington reports Speaker Cannon named two Rule committees during an eight minute house session. The selections include Republicans from Pennsylvania New York Mississippi Missouri Pennsylvania Louisiana Kentucky and Georgia along with Democrats from Ohio. The adjournment followed a Monday session.
The Senate committee on military affairs favored reports for Brigadier General J. K. Aleshire as quartermaster general and Major Amos W. Kimball. Lieutenant Colonel William W. Witherspoon’s promotion to brigadier general was postponed. Six army chaplains received favorable action. General Aberhire’s nomination faced delay due to a vague charge, later cleared. The Senate confirmed James T. McCleary as second assistant postmaster general Abraham L. Lawshe as third assistant postmaster general and Josiah A. Van Orsdell as associate justice of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
Omaha on December 12 two mail pouches containing Christmas and letter mail for Nebraska and Colorado vanished from a mail wagon after loading at the Post Office. The wagon doors were locked at the office, but at the depot the doors were found open and two pouches missing. The pouches were believed to hold valuable contents.
Managers for Secretary Taft and Vice President Fairbanks engage in preparations ahead of the Chicago Convention. Officials set quarters and plan for the event as discussions focus on candidacy and platform.

Des Moines reports indicate Governor Gatamatan urged to announce candidacy for the Republican nomination after a meeting of prominent Iowans. Cummins remains noncommittal, while supporters say he favors the programs. Roosevelt’s stance on a third term boosts Iowa hopes for a favorable outcome.
A Morning Journal Special Leased Wire from Philadelphia dated December reports the Pennsylvania railroad states October earnings fell sharply within the state after the two-cent fare law began. Gross revenue dropped by $64,000 while outside-state lines rose 5 percent. net revenue declined further due to higher operating costs and wage increases.
Washington, Dec. 12. A bill makes it felony for a national bank or its officers to speculate with bank funds and makes it a high misdemeanor to borrow from a national bank to speculate. The felony carries up to ten years in prison and the misdemeanor up to a $1,000 fine.
In Pueblo Colorado a boxing match ended with Kid Carsey of New Castle Pennsylvania knocking out Muggey Shoelx of Cheyenne Wyoming in the eighteenth round tonight.
Norfolk Va Dec 12 A shore leave report says as the fleet sails for the Pacific Monday no Japanese cook or servant remains aboard any tronclads. The commanding officer orders weeded out and replaced by negroes with no reason given.
Washington December 12 The senate debated the practice of sending drafts of bills from executive departments for immediate passage. Senator Caster Montana presented a list of instances where department heads addressed the senate asking passage of new bills. He cited Senator Veller Colorado as part of the discussion.
The Senate debated department head communications to Congress with Aldrich Heyburn Lodge and Bacon criticizing direct advocacy for bills. Aldrich urged stopping the practice and referring the Interior secretary's communication to the Rules Committee. The move passed and the Senate adjourned after a brief session.
Washington reports the Central American peace conference produced an abstract of the general treaty agreeing to establish a permanent Central American court of justice to settle disputes and avoid force, with all controversies to be submitted to the court if foreign diplomats fail to settle them.
San Francisco reports only three verified plague cases this month as the naval sanitary campaign led by Dr. Rupert Blue shows progress. About 115000 rats killed 7189 premises inspected 107 houses disinfected and three destroyed amid a drop in rat catches. Total verified cases reach 122 with 69 deaths 44 recovered 9 under treatment and ? suspected cases.
In San Francisco on December 12 Judge Dunne postponed the arraignment of prize fight promoters Eddie Graney J M Coffroth and Willis Britt who appeared with ex Mayor Eugene E Schmitz to December 19 on bribery charges Judge Lawsom extended the arraignment for G Duffy former commissioner of public works to tomorrow on the bribery count.
Denver judge grants an injunction at the request of the attorney general restraining the Colorado food trust led by the Denver Retail Grocers and Colorado Merchants associations from fixing prices. Retailers are now allowed to cut prices on any article they obtain.
Chicago Dec 12. In Walsh trial witnesses described railroad properties and questioned government claims of worthlessness. auditor BE Ross said Walsh asked to add 50000 to earnings and charge to construction, and to charge 245000 in laws to construction. Ross testified of 463267 unpaid interest on bonds and 637441 transferred to a lodge not paid. A witness denied receiving a 630 dollar Chicago National Bank check.
Nevada mining operations remain idle as workers continue a strike after failing to secure a reopening promise. Operators had vowed to resume open shop production but did not meet the commitment yesterday.
