New York reports reveal Cassie L. Chadwick facing two forgery charges in Ohio after a Lorain County grand jury failed to act and a federal subpoena seeks Carnegie’s testimony. In Cleveland on December 12, Mrs. Cassie L Chadwick faced two indictments by Cuyahoga County grand jury. The notes for 250 000 and 560 000 forged papers alleged forgery and uttering forged documents. Irm Reynolds testified he would no longer shield her while Wade Park Bank secretary confronted questions about his retained personal estate. Information was sent to New York City and Chadwick may be rearrested if bail is posted on other charges.
In Cleveland on December 12 the grand jury heard five witnesses and voted indictments in the Chadwick affair. Prosecutor Keeler announced new subpoenas for Tri Kheynolde, Wade Park Bank secretary treasurer, and I W Bell, Chadwick property receiver, to produce all securities bearing Andrew Carnmer’s signature. He aims to indict others involved. the panel resumes at 4:50 a.m. and a $500,000 note allegedly signed by Andrew Carnmegic was shown, though its existence is uncertain.
President Roosevelt plans a Rough Riders escort for the inaugural parade with Colonel A G Brodie selecting 30 to 50 men from the regiment. In October end a dispatch from Cheron describes twenty two Russian warships in Pare harbor under heavy Japanese fire as the Japanese focus on larger battleships including Vewmede Retvizan Pobieda and others. Several vessels are badly damaged while smaller craft struggle without protection.
In Portland Oregon Dee 12 defense lawyers ask United States District Court to arrest judgment in the land fraud conspiracy case. They argue that multiple indictments for separate acts do not create distinct crimes and would double jeopardy if pursued again. Judge Bellinger’s ruling expected tomorrow amid pending pleas by Marie Ware Horace McKinley and AL Puter.
