Rescue work at two Monongah mines in West Virginia progressed slowly due to danger of fresh explosions. By 11 o’clock 78 bodies had been recovered, with nearly a hundred expected by daylight. Families gathered outside, funerals were planned, and worsening conditions due to thaw, mud, and rain hampered communications.

Police have arrested suspects.
The trial of John Walsh in Chicago was postponed again due to a juror's illness. It is now rescheduled for tomorrow with expectation the juror can attend.
