Regular session of the national legislature opens amid rising interest as lawmakers prepare for probable actions ahead of the impending presidential race. The approach of the election heightens scrutiny and anticipation among officials and observers.
The first day of the session drew large crowds as both houses inaugurated new members. Galleries overflowed with spectators while officials noted formal oaths and ceremonial routines marking the start of lawmakers’ terms.
The Senate met at noon and sworn in Senators Smith and Gardner with Curtis elected president pro tem through December 12. The House also convened at noon with five new members sworn in and many bills introduced including a proposed repeal of the 1832 treaty with Russia and Sherman antitrust repeal efforts. Adjourned at 2 15 pm until noon tomorrow.
The new Congress convened amid crowded galleries as most members filled their seats quickly. Representative Littleton of New York sparked attention with steel trust inquiry remarks and a clash over distribute copies in the house. Five new members were sworn in Browning Ainey Stephens Yaswert and McKellar. President Taft’s initial message to Congress was promised for tomorrow. The senate session lasted 14 minutes with Senators Gallinger and Martin Wie on a committee.
The president pro tempore was elected to serve until next Tuesday to allow Vice President Sherman to attend Mrs. Sherman’s funeral in Utica New York. Twenty four men of the First battalion of York shire Helot infantry the King's own regiment embarked today for Hankow from Hongkong. The unit, 18 in garrison, sails as part of a broader post in China.

Sacramento says there is no obstacle to paying Detective W J Burns the $10,000 reward offered by the state for the capture of the Los Angeles Times dynamiters.
