A government analysis shows a 1923 postal loss of nearly 49 million dollars with most excess costs tied to second class mail. Only first class mail and postal savings operated at a profit, prompting likely rate increases to raise about 1.09 billion in new revenue and support a salary hike for 299 thousand postal workers.
Albany reports Calvin Coolidge's statewide margin over John W. Davis at 69 265 with Coolidge at 1 820 058 votes and Davis at 960 793 while La Follette earned 474 905. Governor Alfred E. Smith had 1 627 111 votes and Theodore Roosevelt 1 518 550 in the governor race.

In Chimayo Rio Arriba county fourteen men fought with seven deputies and seven suspects. Three wounded men Pantaleon Martinez Nicolas Garduno Ramon Padilla are in dying condition. Charges filed include assault with intent to kill and resisting arrest. Deputies faced heavy fire. Epifanio Martinez escaped serious injury aided by a belt buckle.
Edmonds Washington December 3 Mrs J H Kerr a sticker candidate on a clean up the town platform was elected mayor here yesterday by one vote over her opponent M C Engels Mrs Kerr is the first woman to hold the office of mayor here.
Guam continues recovery from the October 1 cyclone that damaged naval property valued at about 100000 and altered the Agana river channel. The flood displaced many families, now aided by the Red Cross and others. The Pensacola, after a Japan trip, reported the typhoon on October 7 with 36 hours of heavy seas. Damaged crew injuries were minor. Naval planners will bridge sections of the new river channel to vent flood waters.
Washington reports President Coolidge sent nominations to the Senate, filling several hundred postmaster vacancies since Congress adjourned. Names listed include Mark A. Winkler in Fort Dodge Iowa and Harry F. Bioneren for East Las Vegas, New Mexico, with John H. York noted among the nominations.

After a Wednesday afternoon hearing before Justice Roddy Susanna Apodaca was held to the grand jury under $1000 bond on a charge of cruelly beating Eugenio Salazar a boy believed to be six to eight years old. The boy showed welts. Apodaca testified she whipped him with her husband's belt. Neighbors said the boy cried at their home and he was taken to the sheriff then to Dr Clayton. The boy is said to be the son of Lorenzo Salazar and abandoned by his parents. The judge ordered steps to place the boy in an orphanage or children's home.
Coroner Ty. B R. W. Leland postponed the inquest into the death of Floyd Raymond Michaelis of Denver at the Y M C A on November 23 until city chemist can determine if poison traces are present in Michaelis stomach.
At the international livestock exposition stockmen and grain growers won grand and reserve honors across animal rings and field crops. Indiana and Montana led divisions with corn and oats champions while Angus calves from Mechanicsburg Illinois captured the grand car lot fat cattle title. Lambs, Shorthorns, Clydesdales and Belgians earned top prizes for producers in Illinois Wisconsin Minnesota Alberta and beyond.
At a bridge eight miles south of Gallup New Mexico about six in the morning Andy Brown a Santa Fe railroad fireman drove into a twenty foot arroyo. His car was followed by Ben Kaufman who crashed into it both vehicles demolished injuring both drivers and four Harvey House waitresses one with a broken back. The bridge lacks guard rails and a sheepman named Abbott earlier broke a pelvic bone at the same spot. The autos were returning from the Shalako Indian dance at Zuni.
Manuel B. Otero Republican candidate for governor polled 6,621 more votes than Dr C L Hill in the 1946 election.
