Reports from London Antwerp and other cities describe German troop transfers through Belgium toward the northeast and a Russian advance prompting German withdrawals. British and French leaders prep to halt the German push toward Paris as field positions shift near Meuse and Vosges.
Paris reports a tense day with war office silence and pessimism among observers. French troops remain largely intact after a week of heavy fighting on a vast front while reinforcements move toward the Belgian frontier. Reports cite battles near Koenigsberg, capture of bridges over the Alle, actions at Tomasheff Monastyskaia and Lwow, and German losses around Soldau Allenstein Brischofsburg with the Magdeburg running aground and Russian ships taking prisoners.
The Senate met in executive session to consider and confirm the nomination of Attorney General McReynolds as an associate justice of the Supreme Court. A British cruiser crippled nine ships in the North Sea battle and limped into port under its own steam. The clash involved eleven German vessels sunk, with other ships damaged or forced to retreat.
London reports that eleven German vessels were sunk off Heligoland as British destroyers and cruisers engaged. German wounded were rescued. many perished at sea or en route to hospitals. The British cruiser Fearless fought fiercely, taking nineteen hits and aiding disabled Germans as other ships joined the action. Casualties for Britain stood at one dead and twenty wounded.
A Berlin dispatch reports in the North Sea northwest of Heligoland an afternoon encounter between several small British cruisers and two flotillas with about forty destroyers against German cruisers. The weather was partly foggy and a desperate isolated engagement followed.
Steaming westward, a contact with large English cruisers led to the Ariadne being sunk after fierce combat. The destroyer N-87 was bombarded and went down with guns firing. its captain was killed. Small cruisers Goelen and Maing reportedly sunk with eight officers and ninety-one men saved by British warships.
The official news bureau states that a Iceland trawler struck a mine off the Tyne on August 26. Mines were laid by German trawlers not as a formal operation but by crews of several trawlers, one identified as Abk-20 of Emden.
Testimony before the federal industrial relations commission shows many unemployed in California not seeking work and that I W W presence among workers is overstated. Paul Scharrenberg of the state labor federation notes I W W members may be more common among students and professors, and that offering a job could change a radical into a conservative.
