German armies fight fiercely with backs toward the Somme, caught in two traps as they struggle to avoid a decisive defeat.
Allied forces push the German front back along a broad arc from Arras to Soissons. French and American troops trap and rout German posts while capturing towns and outflanking positions. Cabell warns Mexican authorities that the American commander may take direct action if sniper fire continues. He states that orders will be carried out to stop the violence and protect border security.
Across the border at Nogales Arizona firing resumed around 4 55 p m with fifteen to twenty shots from the Mexican side. An American enlisted man was wounded as troops and civilians mobilized and a general alarm sounded along the international line. General Cabell warned General Calles that further firing would trigger a full American response. both sides exchanged messages through consuls.
Ariz Aug 2 Official military list shows two American dead and twenty eight wounded from yesterday’s fighting along the international line. Casualties include Captain J D Hungerford and Corporal Bernard Lots killed. Sergeant Victor Devine Arana and Corporal Frank L Whitworth among the wounded. The civilian death is Gaston Reddoch. Additional wounded are Sergeant Fred J Butler, Sergeant Edward Geheve, and several privates with home towns listed in Ohio Missouri Massachusetts Illinois Michigan and Kentucky.
