After three days of fighting, aided by rain, Russians fixed six guns on high muddy positions. In the southern front they captured some Jipanee puta and destroyed mountain batteries. The withdrawal grows as reserves are reportedly continued.
Cripple Creek Colorado reports two Union miners, including G Fue of the Western Federation of Miners, were escorted away by armed men after capture and released on the Cunen City road. Sheriff Beth mobilized deputies but the party escaped before pursuit. In Fort Riley Kansas an annual rifle match drew hundreds for multi‑distance shooting, whileBaltimore and Tolchester reported a mariner death after a fall from a steamer Latalee.
A 180-strong Uruguayan revolutionary force led by Colonel Paampillon was spotted off the coast and attacked by government troops in Argentine territory. Eight insurgents were captured. others are unaccounted. Uruguay’s President Ordóñez warned of the insurrection and dispatched armed vessels. Diplomatic relations between Argentina and Uruguay have grown strained.
Paraguayan revolutionary vessels move with men horses and arms searching all passenger boats. An Argentine warship threatened to fire on the revolutionary squadron if it intercepted vessels flying the Argentine flag.
At Mt Louis Missouri on August 24 Jarney Oldfield crashed after control failed at the World’s Fair automobile speed contest. He killed John Beott a park watchman and Nathan Montgomery a Black soldier. Oldfield was badly injured and his car demolished. A.C. Webb won the race by a large margin.
Glasgow reports Georgine L Watson is considered to design Shamrock IV if fit to take on the commission. Lipton consulted yacht men and favors Watson, whose Cup experience began with the Phistle in 1877. Watson would work with Dennys of Dumbarton if he accepts. General Vilghueh Lee visits Chickamauga and Athletes while promoting the Jamestown Exposition.
St John’s news reports the schooner Selita sailing to Labrador with four crew lost in a suspected wreck. A fierce storm has swept the coast for days, and more disasters are feared as the vessel battles the violent seas.
Timothy L. Woodruff, a Republican leader in Ingle County, emerges as the leading candidate for the party nomination for governor. He has spoken with President Roosevelt Senator Platt and Governor Odell, with an agreement suggesting near certainty of the nomination if delegates favor him at the convention. Constable Rodriguez and Marshal Kilbourne died from gunshot wounds, Deputy Murray shot Chinoworth, Kennedy surrendered, Nunn survived but may lose sight in one eye.
Tonopah Nevada reports the Tonopah Railroad suffers its worst washouts, stopping freight and passenger traffic for days. The Rhodes end of the line and a ten to twelve mile stretch flood the tracks. Passengers fleeing Tonopah are forced to walk to Sodaville amid further washouts on the Carson and Colorado line between Hawthorne and Sodaville.
