A Franco British force continues a vigorous forward sweep along the 75 mile front despite intense enemy counterattacks. Units press the line as allied assaults push toward strategic positions with heavy fighting reported in several sectors.
British and French forces advance from Arras to Soissons as German defenses crumble. heavy losses mount for Germany with towns and roads falling eastward, and prisoners rise to over 21 000. Canadian troops press between Sensee and Scarpe as Bapaume nears encirclement. air squads harass retreating forces while American troops clash near Bazoches and Filmette.
Denver Colorado and surrounding area forecast for Wednesday through Thursday shows partly cloudy conditions in Denver and New Mexico with cooler air arriving Thursday. Arizona expects similar partly cloudy skies with chances of showers and cooler temperatures in the eastern portion.
A 24 hour weather summary shows a high of 9 degrees and a low of 36. Southeast winds were recorded with clear skies at 6 p.m. Conditions were dry with mild temperatures and no precipitation noted.

Washington Aug 27 leaders of wet and dry factions see broad support for absolute prohibition from January 1 1919 to July 1 next year. Senate resumes action on the measure with a compromise to halt beer and wine production May 1 1919 and continue distilled beverage controls under food law. California grape growers urge postponement to July 1 1920.
Detroit August 28 Henry Ford of Detroit slips from second to third in unofficial Republican senatorial returns while Commander Truman H Newberry widens his lead.
American troops on the Vesle Front attacked German forces three miles west of Vismes and near Memetie and Taveches. They held the upper hand as German bombardment continued in Pismette, Texoches, and Baxzoches corridors. A German plane fell to American fire near Pismette.
American submarine chaser No. 209 out of Philadelphia was fired on by the steamer Felix Tauraig near Fire Island and sunk. Seventeen crew members including the commander and exec officer are missing. Eight survivors, some wounded, landed in New York and Lewes. others unaccounted. Survivors and wounded were taken to a hospital ship after transfer from a destroyer. Searchers continue for more crew.
United States Ambassador to Great Britain Walter Hines Page, based in London since April 1913, plans to retire due to ill health. He has requested resignation to President Wilson, who has accepted it, with a successor not yet announced. Page faced long war duties and earlier caused debate with remarks on the Monroe Doctrine and Panama Canal.
British troops captured portions of the Hindenburg line northwest of Fontaine to Crosilles and near Arras. Maricourt and areas east of it fell, Trones station and adjacent ground were taken, and Moerlin-De-Fargy area secured. North of the Somme, Hale’s forces advanced along 8,000 yards with Montauban and Dompierre sectors reported in British hands. Outskirts of Pionvain reached and Vancourt captured after an all night fight. fighting continues near Vaux-Vra ncourt and railway east toward Cambrai.
President Wilson approves the conviction of Second Lieutenant Stanley F. Walker of the Infantry Reserve Corps for desertion at Camp Lewis Washington last February. The original twenty five year sentence at hard labor was reduced to ten years by the President after Walker returned and surrendered in Washington three weeks later.
London Aug 20 The award to temporary and honorary Captain Kermit Roosevelt for services in Mesopotamia was announced in the official gazette tonight. He served with the British army in Mesopotamia before joining American forces in France on special duty.
Wartime notice states that men between ages 45 and 53 may join designated branches. The approval comes from the War Department Ordnance Department and medical corps for certain posts to free younger men for active service.
Paris reports Lieutenant Behwieger who commanded a large submarine that torpedoed a British steamer between Malta and Sicily has been captured by a French patrol. The crew of 14 perished with only one officer and four men rescued. Santa Fe notes Dr. John F. Mott assigns A. J. Brient of El Paso as director for the YMCA war works drive in New Mexico starting November 11.
Vladivostok dispatch describes Chechoslovaks and Uroholovaki guards under heavy fire near the Ussuri river area after General Kelmintoff's retirement. American troops establish a base at the head of the bay with ample storage and rail facilities and organize a prisoner labor battalion to ease supply needs.
Emperor Yoshi hite summoned officials to the palace to report on the race riots that have largely ceased. Corest continues in minor districts with significant damage and several rioters killed.
A Nogales confrontation along International Avenue leaves one American officer dead and a civilian killed, with many Americans wounded and 10 to 20 soldiers killed as reinforcements push to the border. Mexican casualties are estimated. fighting ends after white flag parity.
Senate Republicans led by Senator Lodge assailed wartime censorship orders barring transmissions abroad. They argued the report on aircraft production is already known to allies and enemy and claimed the orders aim to influence publishers against printing the findings in the United States.
Farmers and landowners in the Mesilla Valley plan a September 10 meeting to adopt resolutions urging the government to supply free water to all landowners under the Elephant Butte dam during the war. The call was signed by twenty five prominent valley residents. They presently pay for water service and irrigation projects managed by the United States reclamation service. Farmers say free water would enable them to double war crops.
The commander of the Arizona district left by automobile at ten o'clock for Nogales to assume charge there until peace is restored.
Aug 27 Nogales Ariz report says Pelix Penaloza mayor of Nogales Sonora is said to be dead though unconfirmed amid heavy cross border fire. American sentry shot. Mexican troops and guards exchanged fire for over an hour and a half. Casualties include three American soldiers and seven to eight Mexicans. reinforcements ordered. A truce was discussed but fighting continued into the night.
Washington dispatch reports no official word on a clash between American and Mexican forces at Ars Officials say no confirmation exists and details are pending from military authorities.
