Santa Fe dispatch notes governors Mills to issue election call for November 7 and both state central committees to meet next week. Republicans and Democrats foresee full conventions by September end. Deming August 27 Luna county has a candidate for the state corporation commission Hugh Williams a Santa Fe railroad conductor supported by railroad employee organizations as a Republican he is expected to mount a strong fight for the nomination at the approaching convention
Seattle Washington April 27 Frank H Kimball confessed bank swindler from Guthrie Oklahoma returned the proceeds of his crimes to three local banks and real estate promoter C L Hillman. Of the 17250 obtained his operations all but 600 was restored to rightful owners. He is charged with forgery by information filed in superior court.
Grand Rapids Aug 27 Charles Hopper of Chicago who murdered Daisy Watts in Lake Michigan by throwing her from a steamer refuses food in Grang Haven jail. He plans no appeals and says he killed to stop her from returning to the underworld. Hopper’s account traces their years together in Chicago and a Halstead Street Chinese resort where she used opium. She left him and he followed to the boat where the fatal confrontation occurred.
Maine voters will decide on September 11 whether to retain constitutional prohibition of the liquor traffic. The state has seen a flood of literature from both sides and many public meetings as the issue remains contested. Maine pioneered constitutional prohibition first adopted in 1884 after earlier statutory measures.
The Republican Central Committee of New Mexico called to meet at Santa Fe at 10 a m on Monday September 4 1911 to transact business and consider proper matters. Members are required to attend in person and the public is invited to attend.BURSUM Attest Chairman JOSE DD BENA
Francisco I. Madero to be formally nominated by 1,500 clubs at a national progressive party convention in Mexico City. Vice presidential candidates include Jose Pino Suarez and others as Reyes and Vasquez Gomez clash. crowds cheer Madero while saloons close and troops guard the capital.
Washington awaits a Supreme Court ruling on whether continuous concealment of assets before filing a bankruptcy petition qualifies as concealed property under four months prior to filing. The case involves John L. James of Onslow County North Carolina who hid goods in a swamp before his involuntary bankruptcy petition filed February 1 1908. The circuit court of appeals ruled concealment continued daily until discovery. The Supreme Court is expected to decide in October.
The Lehigh Valley train disaster near Manchester New York claims two more victims bringing the death toll to twenty nine. A bloodstained doll found at the wreck is returned to Esther Taylor of Landsdowne Pa who tends her grandmother in Buffalo while her mother was injured. William Lee, charged with killing his father, mother, and brother in Hooneville Indiana, made a third confession while in solitary at the Indiana Reformatory. He arrived from Princeton and reiterated earlier details claiming fear of being killed by his parents. He remained cheerful and attempted casual talk with officials during transport and on the jury trip.
Sixty hurt eight seriously when an express on the Valley division of the New York New Haven and Hartford railroad leapt a thirty foot embankment after rails spread. Two baggage cars plunged down the embankment and a passenger coach struck the tender wreckage. The engineer was freed with a dislocated hip and bruises.
The pope held mass in Rome on August 27 and then visited the Vatican Gardens to greet his first visitor since illness. Cardinal Arcoverde de Albuquerque, archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, came to bid farewell before departing for America. Postmaster General Hitcheock designated fifty additional first class post offices as postal savings depositories. Receipts at the offices already open in New York Chicago St Louis and Boston reached a quarter of a million dollars by the end of three weeks since opening on August first.
A baseless fear during a Canonsburg opera house screening caused a deadly stampede. A bright flash and a shouted fire trigger led to a crush on a six and a half foot wide stairway. twenty six people died, twenty five injured, thirty others hurt as they tried to exit. Coroner Hoffman ordered a jury to investigate.
A Ban Francisco operator died from burns suffered in a booth incident on March 27. Isaac was involved in the accident. authorities investigated the cause and securing the scene.
Aus urus, operator of a moving picture machine, probably fatally injured when a film exploded at the Hayes street theater late tonight. The audience fled through doors thrown open as a fire started. flames were quickly extinguished with little damage to the building.
President Taft enjoyed a complete rest in Beverly Massachusetts. He attended church with Mrs Taft this morning hearing a sermon by Rev A G Pierce pastor of the president’s Washington church. In the afternoon he took a short ride before returning to his temporary stay.
Patrolman J C Clarke and Patrolman A C Cooper were shot and seriously wounded while attempting to capture men said to be Black Handers in Dorchester. Patrolman B Dougherty was shot in the hand as four suspects were arrested. The gunmen allegedly ordered Maré De Angelo to place 1000 in railroad yards. The suspects claim they knew of a letter to Mrs Angelo and waited to claim the money, shooting at plainclothes officers. Police found no proof to disprove the tale. Slight earthquake noted in New Orleans seismograph records lasting from 4 05 to 4 50 this morning with a maximum of five millimeters.
A rapidly forming hurricane hit the South Atlantic coast, moving at high speed and causing widespread damage in Savannah and surrounding areas. Wires, windows, and trees were destroyed, isolating Charleston and Beaufort briefly, with high tides reported at Tybee Island and ships unable to enter Charleston harbor.
Atlanta GA August 27 Charleston South Carolina was cut off from all outside communication by a coastal storm that swept the area. Reports from nearby points described high winds and rough seas while trains brought word that the storm may have peaked. Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms reported strong winds and high waves threatening resort structures as Beaufort and Georgetown likewise lost contact.
Paris Louvre theft of the Mona Lisa prompts Cherbourg police to report two travelers with two framed canvases separated by a wooden panel sailing on the Kaiser Wilhelm II to New York. New York police alerted as authorities consider the panel may conceal the famous painting.
Visitors to Villa Carlotta on Lake Como report the disappearance of a fine copy of the painting Mona Lisa from the gallery. The fate of the copy is unknown and newspapers hint at a link to the Louvre original theft.
Winnipeg August 27 Canadian Pacific railway announced an eight percent wage increase to mechanics across western Canada. The measure affects about fifteen thousand workers and was declared satisfactory by the union.
Prof Edward L Curtis age 75 Greek instructor at Yale divinity school died aboard the Hoston boat on the way to Hockland Me from Castine last night. Death attributed to an acute heart is disease. He was the son of Rev William Stanton Curtis who once served as president of Knox College.
A new witness, George Jones, claimed he knew a day ahead of the murder of Henry Clay Beattie Jr. Jones and Chewn ing will testify as the trial resumes in Chesterfield court house. Prosecutors seek to use Jones’s remarks to link Beattie to the Binford motive.
The Topeka editor Arthur Capper received over 500 letters from men west of the Mississippi and some east of it after publishing a Massachusetts widow's plea for a husband. Capper forwards promising suitors to the widow and will investigate each man before presenting options.
