Washington August 26 reports indicate a strong chance of extending the wartime prohibition date beyond January 1 1919 through Senate House compromise talks. President Wilson favors delay to allow adjustments with a July 1 date emerging as a compromise. Prohibition advocates favor July 1 while opponents concede passage appears likely.
Americans arriving from Mexico report a passenger train was wrecked by bandits near Tepehuanes, Durango. Ninety passengers and soldiers killed, sixty injured, and a bridge destroyed. Bandits under Am os and Galaviz fired on coaches, bayoneting women and children. sixty five federal soldiers died, ammunition car captured.
