In Idaho Springs at 2 30 am two burglars attempted the William Norman & Bros store. Fred Norman was shot in the left breast by a .44 caliber ball as pursuers closed. Burglars fled and are being pursued by local residents. William Norman and Henry Ellis aided in guarding the store.
Denver Tribune reports contractors Wellington Smith & Co sink the government artesian well at Cheyenne Wells on the Kansas Pacific. After forty days they reach only 200 feet as a ten inch pipe bursts at six feet, delaying work by at least three weeks while machinery is sent from Indiana Pennsylvania to extract the pipe.
Hartford July 25 William Hockafellow training double team Clara and Independence raced to a record in a 2 1 0 0 mile tag at Charter Oak Park. The previous mark stood at 2 1 4.
Governor Hubbard visited Rochester with relief committee members to inspect destruction. The city counts 613 houses demolished, 31 killed, 100 wounded, 120 families left destitute. The relief group will fund rebuilding up to at least 80 percent and has received significant cash support for immediate needs.
Aug. 25. Macon Mo Sheela f George Stewart shot and killed Waiter Tracy yesterday. The murder arose from Tracy refusing to live with Stewart's sister whom Stewart forced Tracy to marry weeks earlier. Stewart escaped. John B Sweeney, suspected in the Winita am robbery, was arrested yesterday at Missouri City by Clay county sheriff while visiting relatives.
General Crook states in a August 7 dispatch that Chiricahuas on the Sierra Madre surrender live on San Carlos with promises of no punishment if peaceful. He warns extermination would trigger regional war and urges continued good faith to protect Sonora and Chihuahua but allow safe return of loyal prisoners. Also reports a bar dispute at S P depot end with Beaumont attacked bartender Wentworth notes bartender under bonds.
Judge Moran granted a temporary injunction preventing J W W Midgey a Southwestern railroad pool commissioner from diverting freight to lines other than those consignors choose. Continental Sugar Refinery of Boston sought relief, stating pool rules force equal treatment and shippers have no option. The company argues railways as common carriers must accept and transport all tendered freight despite pool rules.
In Zanesville Ohio a rich vein of lubricating oil was struck at a depth of thirty feet fifteen miles downriver yesterday. The oil is flowing rapidly and estimated to yield a strong finding for local industry.
