Washington Aug. 24 The State Department denies naming any Mexican for provisional president as it awaits Carranza’s reply to the Pan American call for a peace conference in Mexico. Carranza’s agents report his reply is complete and will reach Washington soon, with hopes for quick recognition of his government and a show of unity from Carranza generals and governors. The outcome of Monterey fighting may shape the conference’s course.
Louis Stevens county ranger reports Mexican soldiers fired across the border at San Antonio canyon two miles south of Duchesne injuring none and exchanging about 400 shots at 500 yards. His brother Harry and cattleman Marshall McDonnell were with him. Stevens says border breastworks and two machine guns facing the line have been set up near Lochiel where American troops have been fired upon in the past week.
Dispatches from Nogales report Yoaqui Indians attacked Hermosillo, Sonora, but Carranza loyalists repelled them. Twenty six died, including landowner Alberto Campu whose flour mill burned. Carranza authorities impose prohibition in larger towns under control and Cananea and Nacori plans emerge to dry up liquor and pay workers in silver coins amid a chaotic currency year.
El Paso August 24 officers report General Madero defeated Carranza forces at Villa Garcia near Monterey and drove them into Monterrey after reorganizing his troops. Madero reportedly tallied heavy losses in the first engagement but claims Carranza losses were severe in the second fight. Angeles to command Villa sources in Sonora and maytorena to yield military authority. Carranza consulate says Generals Herrera and Roscon with 600 men have reached Minaca at the junction of the Mexican North Western line and the Kansas City Mexican.
