A mob of 40 to 50 men kidnapped William Spain, an 18 year old Black man, from Dorchester jail after he was identified by a witness. They hanged him from an oak and fired about 40 shots, marking the third lynching in South Carolina within ten days.
Akron Ohio August 3 United States Senator Charles Dick chairman of the Ohio Republican state executive committee advocates a convention driven platform debated in committee of the whole with two resolutions one endorsing and one censuring the two Ohio senators Roosevelt administration and Congress would be heartily endorsed He also calls for a rules change to elect the state party chair by the convention in the same way as state officers. Chicago August 23 Two hundred central exchange girls strike at the Chicago Telephone Company after a rear door entry rule triggers complaints and causes seven thousand lines to go out of service.
Honolulu reports more anchors sent from the Manchuria to keep the vessel off the reef as tides rise. The sea remains calm and salvage efforts are renewed at high tide tonight with little hope of success. Passengers and treasure were brought ashore and the vessel's crew expected to land later today.

The Manning returns for coal after a 4.5 inch cable parted during a salvage attempt and Captain Metcalf is en route from San Francisco with salvage gear.

Nogales Ariz Aug 23 The firm of Ramirez the largest customs brokers in Sonora Mexico was closed by Mexican officials on a charge of making false customs entries for forty seven carloads of wheat shipped from the United States Three clerks and Senor Ramirez are in the Nogales Sonora jail with bail refused to them in any amount.
In a fiery Arizona primary the anti joint statehood faction narrowly won delegates to the territorial convention by 38 votes. Statehood backers claimed 46 percent of the total vote and celebrated in Phoenix as corporations federal officials and railroad interests opposed them.
William Ff Beverly named assignee for the suspended Sage & Co stock house. Beverly says liabilities total about 330000 with assets around 116000 and that a 900000 bond is filed with United States Fidelity and Guaranty Co. Office doors report 25000 accounts to be settled nationwide as losses reach about 1000000.
