Washington August 22 A rate war over canal tolls looms as Suez plans to cut transit dues after next year to 6.25 francs per loaded ship. Professor Emory P Johnson argues Panama must offer lower tolls to win European to Asia trade, despite Suez advantages and coal prices shaping route choices.
Kansas City boys John Parley and John Heinberger admitted they killed four-year-old Joe Timmerman after a stone hit him in the temple during a woods outing. They said they hid the body in brush and later confessed following conflicting stories.

Cajon is near the Mexican line and the six men were believed to be filibusters who planned to cross into Lower California to join a revolution. San Diego police acted without waiting for Fort Rosecrans authorities amid fears of renewed unrest from the Industrial Workers of the World clash.
A bandit boarded Union Pacific No. 11 at Kansas City and bound and gagged six mail clerks before fleeing with four sacks of mail. He was shot by a police officer during arrest in Topeka and taken to a hospital in critical condition. The suspect, about 40, uniden tified, collapsed after a pistol discharge. A note in his clothing was found for Mrs. Willis Lonsberry of Medford Oregon.
Kansas City August 22 Five million dollars were voted by the Loyal Order of Moose in session here for member benefits. The plan includes a vocational trade school for children a home for aged and infirm members a home for orphans of members on a 1000 acre tract at Anderson Indiana a general sanitarium in the west and a tuberculosis sanitarium in a suitable climate city.
Chief Geronimo and 278 Apache prisoners at Fort Sill Oklahoma will be released and turned over to the secretary of war with $250 000 appropriated for disposition as directed by the war department The conference report on the Indian appropriation bill was agreed upon by house and senate managers in Washington on August 22.

Deputy Sheriff Samuel Good Sr and State ranger G S Baker arrested him awaiting requisition papers. Geek denies the accusation saying a mistake was made. The Los Angeles case ties him to a brutal murder the night the Times building was bombed.
Sterling NL Aug 22 2000 people waited for admission as a barn fire lit the Ringling Brothers tent center. The blaze collapsed the canvas destroying scenery and trappings with losses estimated from 10 000 to 60 000. Animals were rescued.
Railroads cut north and south of Magdalena in Sonora state. A veteran Indian fighter is ready for a fight as police and locals brace for conflict.
Reports from Juarez state General Emilio Kosterlitzky and 600 rurales are cornered near Magdalena south of Nogales as rebels burn railway bridges and advance toward Hermosillo and Guaymas. Orozco's forces push through Sonora while fed eral troops regroup and plan a Sunday review.

Kermaker of Compania Naviera del Pacifico received word that the steamer Benito Juarez, reported seized by Mexican rebels, has escaped custody off Mazatlan and is headed to San Quinten, with arrival expected August 26. The Mexican consul in San Diego has not confirmed the gunboat General Guerrero seizure.
Denver reports a new dahlia variety named Rusby Dahlia in honor of Dr. H H Rusby of New York. Propagated by William M Wilmore at a large Denver dahlias farm the flower is praised for a deeper golden hue larger size and longer petals. Dr Busby praised the bloom after first viewing.
Colonel Roosevelt denounces Senator Penrose as he praises honesty in business and politics. He recalls denying oil contributions and advocates a popular election of U.S. senators, inviting Pennsylvanians to judge Penrose at the polls.
F. R. Sinclair, Western Pacific operator at Belden, was found lifeless at his telegraph key. Oroville dispatchers failed to raise Belden to transmit dispatches preventing a crash. Trains were flagged as heart disease was listed as the cause of Sinclair’s death.
