Reports say Baron Kaneko’s secretary Saki was here earlier but not today while Meyer informs St Petersburg of messages to Korperor Nicholas. President’s peace proposal relies on Nicholas I and Witte. Witte favors it but needs the Emperor’s approval. Col Michael arrives from the State Department for routine business.
Mrs. Mize of New York was shot through the heart during a robbery on Fifty-ninth street near Washington avenue while resisting the assailant. Mrs. FE Wilson of Las Cruces, a hotel guest, fainted after the shot and is hospitalized. the killer fled into an alley as detectives swarmed the scene.
Edwin H. Conger of Iowa resigns as ambassador to Mexico effective October 18, 1905. President Roosevelt accepts the resignation and praises his service. Rumors of a China mission are uncertain, with possible successors named, including David K. Thompson.

Officials clash with delegates over current law and a California proposal framed as a political tax. The resolutions committee rejected the immigration measure and halted action on a proposed amendment benefiting large landholders.

In Tientsin on August 22 a would be assassin disguised as a soldier failed to attack the Dowager Empress of China. Security guards acted swiftly. one guard lunged with a bayonet, thwarting the attempt. Several malcontents aiding the plot were arrested and may face summary punishment.
In Frankfort Kentucky on August 22 George Smith and his son James Smith were killed on their Elmville farm by an unknown assailant. The elder was shot through the brain and the son wounded while fleeing. Neighbor Col Newton was arrested amid bloodline quarrels over a farm fence. Newton denies guilt. In Denver Judge Mulrine removed H M Beatty as assignee of the Western Bank and named Continental Trust as assignee. Supreme Court may issue a stay writ.
