Albuquerque and towns across New Mexico erupt in unrestrained jubilation after the president signs the statehood bill. Bonfires blaze in Folsom, Columbus, Farmington, and Carlsbad as communities rally with speeches and celebratory crowds to mark the end of the long statehood struggle.
Socorro New Mexico August 21 Citizens rally nominates Mayor H Bursum for New Mexico governor at statehood celebration. A rousing statehood jubilee in Alamogordo New Mexico features speeches by Judge Sherry Judge Fall W K Stalcup J H Murray and others. The town is decorated with flags and enthusiasm runs high as residents celebrate.
Henry Clay Beattie Jr faces murder charges after a motor ride death of his wife Beattie pleads not guilty. About a thousand spectators filled the Chesterfield Court House as indictments were read and a special venire summoned for Wednesday. Beattie Sr and key witnesses observed the proceedings while Beulah Binford, a 17 year old witness, remained jailed in Richmond.
Pope Pius, despite illness and a heat wave, heard mass and conferred with Cardinal Merry del Val in the Vatican. He then worked longer at his desk than at any time since his illness and wished to resume private audiences for waiting followers.
Washington Aug 21 Secretary Wilson closed the congressional inquiry into Dr. H W Wiley head of the bureau of chemistry with sharp criticism of Wiley s demeanor and hints of renewed conflicts over pure food questions. Wilson cited possible payments to experts in the Coca Cola case and questioned Wiley s fit as an expert while recounting cabinet discussions on corn syrup and sugar substitutes.
Washington dispatch reports the extra session will close at 3 pm with Tafts veto of the cotton tariff bill ready for in the noon session tomorrow. Democratic Leader Underwood will refer the veto to Ways and Means. Senate adjourns until tomorrow. Mann filibuster ends as Wilson resolution moves forward. Additional bills pass including Kiowa Comanche Apache funds and Niagara diversion extension.
After a four hour debate the House concurred 180 to 107 in the Senate amend ment to the Underwood cotton tariff revision bill and sent it to President Taft. It would cut the cotton tariff about twenty one percent ad valorem and include schedules reducing duties on iron and steel and cotton machinery. Eight Republican insurgents joined Democrats. The measure faces a veto tomorrow and future enactment in December.
The record notes Republican insurgents voting for the tariff bill include Davis Lindbergh Volstead Steenerson of Minnesota Hanna and Helgeson North Dakota Norris Nebraska and Lafferty Oregon with reference to tariff legislation before enactment.
Democratic members of the House debated opening party caucuses to the press. A committee of Underwood, James, Palmer Hardy and Speaker Clark will report to a future caucus. Henry of Texas endorsed the plan, calling for no more secret caucuses and public proceedings.
After Congress adjourns at 3 pm, President Taft will leave Washington to Rochester New York and Beverly Massachusetts. He will address the National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic in Rochester and remain away from the capital until November 1. The trip will take him to San Francisco and Seattle after a three week stay along the North shore.
Gov Johnson accepts Indiana’s requisition to return Los Angeles detective James Hosick to Indianapolis for trial on kidnapping charges linked to the McNamara case. Los Angeles attorney J Fleming opposes. Indiana prosecutor Henry Seigried argues Hosick abducted an Indiana citizen without due process.
Chicago Aug 21 George Hackenschmidt the wrestler took no training for his championship match with Frank Gotch. His lame shoulder from Sunday continued and a blister on his right heel irritated him. The Russian Lion said he would do no mat work this week and left his north shore training camp by automobile.
London reports the railway strike largely settled with a truce on lines except London and North Western. The Board of Trade works toward amicable deals with line managers and North Sea traders. King George telegraphs praise to Premier Asquith Lloyd George and Sydney Buxton for averting a disaster.
Riots flare as newsboys strike. several newspaper wagons burned and stones thrown. Police charge with batons. streets blocked and editions unavailable. newspaper offices heavily guarded.
Morning Journal report says Zapatista revolt spread in Morelos with ten insurrectos said to report to Francisco I. Madero in Canautla and leaders plan continued raids. Madero claims proof of General Bernardo Jeves’s involvement with federal officers to keep the revolt alive. President De la Barra asked for all data collected.
Reports from Washington indicate Port Bliss in El Paso Texas will be raised to a full regimental post. The post will house the twenty third infantry, a cavalry regiment, and an artillery battery with preliminary preparations underway.
