A Navy court finds the Bennington explosion arose from a closed valve and unsafe pressure rather than defective boilers. Ensign Wade is to stand trial. other named crewmen are deceased.
Boston August 21 J D Standish once a Pennsylvania legislator was sentenced to three to six years in state prison for uttering forged checks in 1961. Standish, 72, a former schoolmaster and associate of Senator M Quay, had prior Canadian offenses and a controversial pardon.
War department says charges were filed last April against Major Taggart who sues his wife for divorce in Ohio. No action will be taken until the divorce suit ends. Taggart also filed charges against Colonel Miller earlier, but they were dismissed as trivial.
Arthur Codman Hurd of New York and Huntington saved Miss Mary Mortimer a nurse from Shrocklyn after a drowning incident in a mill pond. Mortimer could not swim and slipped into a deep hole near floodgates. Hurd wrestled to break her grip and brought her to shore after they both went under.
Special to the Morning Journal Las Vegas New Mexico August 21 thieves entered via a rear window pried open the manager’s desk and took about 28 dollars from the cash drawer the theft discovered this morning. Also note Clifton ball team preparing for a week series and an excursion from Santa Fe to Las Vegas with 255 Santa Fe residents joining. Telegraph work on Colorado extension from Las Vegas to Santa begun with 60 men. project expected to finish in about one month. Construction on Las Vegas street carriage and the new power house foundation both started today.
The Dutch have occupied Celebes in a second punitive expedition against the Prince of Boni. The first expedition failed due to swampy roads. Recent fighting left 256 ton rebels killed, demoralizing the opposition.
New York reports Russell Sage, aged eighty nine, told a friend he expects to live to 100 and foresees Missouri Pacific stock reaching 200 before he dies. The Stock Exchange crowd recalls his predication and denouncement of past rank manipulation as Missouri Pacific moved from 125 to 124 to 125.
In Muscogee on August 21 the chieftaincy of the civilized tribes convened to urge statehood for the Indian Territory. Leaders expect a separate statehood bid but may accept joint statehood with Oklahoma. The convention aims to draft a constitutional plan, propose prohibition, and seek ratification funding.
In Havana August 21 the Moderate leaders unveiled a pact with Nationalist chief Thever Nor Nunes. Nationalists will back the Moderate candidate for governor and help place one of two senatorial contenders from Havana province. The accord also targets three of six Havana congress seats and a related arrangement for provincial councillors and the vice governorship with Nunes’s pick, Sener Heoneacheu, in line. In Turin August 33 an assassination attempt targeted Queen Margherita during a tour of the Alps. The queen mother’s auto struck a stone barricade and overturned. no injuries among five aboard, but alarm was high.
Washington reports the contract for the new San Francisco custom house awarded to Thomas Butler of San Francisco at a bid of 1 194 000 dollars. The building is to be completed by March 1 1908.
A destructive windstorm swept southern Minnesota on Saturday night killing Tosten Danielson at Pilot Mound and leaving several missing in Lanesboro and Rushford. The tornado cut telephone lines and destroyed crops and homes, with families of Danielson, BR Boe, Andrew Menus, W Crocker, and Frank Bandera reported missing at late hours.
A feverish individual caused a disturbance in a courtroom prompting officials to seek order. Police intervened to restore decorum as observers watched the incident unfold.
New Orleans reports higher yellow fever deaths including sailors at the Marine Hospital and a man at the French Asylum. A prison case prompts thorough cleaning and fumigation of the dock area and courtroom. The Slidell camp is closed and a new Marine Hospital camp at Marrhan is the first of its kind built for the service.

Lincoln Nebraska August 21 Warden Beemer of the state penitentiary reports Amos H Gould cashier at Bellwood bank convicted of robbing the bank acted as courier supplying opium and cocaine to convicts. One inmate found suffering this morning after detection.
Readline reports Gould, an inmate at the broom factory unit, allegedly hid cocaine in broom corn and sent prisoners to collect it for a high price. The cashier laundered profits, Gould wore stripes after switching from prison gray, and lost good time. In Newport, funeral rites were held for Vinson S. Walsh after an auto crash. only Walsh family friends attended. Miss Evelyn Walsh suffered a fractured thigh while others injured recovered.
New York August 12 a cigar box explosive wrapped as a gift arrived for Precinct Police Captain Miles O Reilly. The device used gun cotton and hidden matches could have killed him. similar threats have targeted banker Jacob H Schiff and M Guegenheim Sons in the prior days. Warsaw reports a general strike in Poland over representation rights in the national assembly as railway workers walk off.
The census bureau released a supplemental report on 1904 cotton ginning. The total ginned quantity is fixed at 13,693,279 bales, counting each round bale as half a bale, up from 13,597,782.
In Jolo and Manila reports Secretary Taft and Miss Roosevelt attend a grand parade. The Sultan of Sulu offers marriage to Miss Roosevelt and vows to make her sultana, as Moros join in colorful carabao and bullfight celebrations with gifts presented.
Governor Steckham ordered Adjutant General Haley to send troops to Russellville to shield M R K Fietcher and Gilly Lyson from mob violence after they were charged with assault on a young German girl in Kansas City. Eli Titus, longtime livestock agent for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe, died in his 49th year after years of paralysis.
In Portland on August 2 the thirteenth annual National Irrigation Congress opened at Lewis & Clark auditorium with over a thousand delegates representing most states. Governor Pardee of California presided, Governor Chamberlain welcomed Oregon, criticizing irrigation laws for insufficient power to condemn private property. Mayor Harry Lane welcomed delegates for the city.

Baron Kanee, Japan's representative, visited Oyster Bay and met with President Roosevelt. He declined to reveal details of his mission after a three quarter hour discussion, saying only that Japan had made concessions, and stressing his remarks were his own views.
