Gain of two miles on a fifteen mile front in the sector between the Oise and Aisne follows Sunday’s push. The French line reports threat to enemy positions as they extend their advance in the region.
Allied forces gain ground from the Aisne to the Lys in a new Mangin offensive. French and British troops push forward, forcing German retreats and capturing villages and prisoners across the Arras and Lys sectors. Advances threaten Noyon and Roye while Veteran German positions weaken north of the Oise and on the Vesle front remains quiet.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions across New Mexico on Wednesday and Thursday with showers and warmer readings in the northwest on Wednesday. Arizona should see fair weather on Wednesday with a local shower in the east portion and continued generally fair conditions Thursday.
Local weather report notes a maximum temperature of 88 degrees and a minimum of 66. Winds from the southwest at 6 pm brought a partly cloudy sky.

Lieut Leonard C Hoskins of Las Vegas New Mexico is the first from the state awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism near La Chapelle France on June 28 He entered a shell swept area to aid the wounded and was killed while guiding others He was born in Las Vegas in 1904 a Normal University graduate and a memorial service was held July 15 at the Normal chapel Fort Worth.
Washington reports official dispatches recounting gallantry by American soldiers and Marines at the Marne and in France. The War Department lists 25 Distinguished Service Cross recipients, including several posthumous awards, with detailed acts of bravery noted for individuals such as Private Christenberry and Lieut Col Frank H Adams.
Washington Aug 26 The navy department said a captain of an American steamer rammed a submarine near Winter Quarter shoal on Aug 17. The bow was damaged and water entered the hold. the captain believes the submarine was sunk. The vessel name was not released. The submarine crew spoke German and claimed friendship but were denied by the captain.
German war correspondents report inspecting seized weapons from the Seventy seventh American regiment. They describe sawed off shotguns loaded with buckshot and argue their use contravenes the Geneva convention. They note troops use shotguns for police duties behind lines and for guarding prisoners, while high power rifles are deemed dangerous in such roles.
Dublin reports near a thousand influenza cases stemming from an outbreak that began in Belfast. Schools closed as the city battles the surge with only a few fatalities recorded.

With the French Army in France, Aus. 39 by the Associated Press. General Mangin's force attacked from Fontenoy toward Alene to Plia prex, advancing favorably as prisoners arrived at the rear. The Germans clung to strong positions along the Oise south of Carlepont, Culene, and Lombrey, while French aviators provided regular updates and harassed the enemy with machine gun fire.

Washington Aug 20 The House Ways and Means Committee adjourned without finalizing divisions for the income and excess profits bases of the $8 billion revenue bill. Chairman Kitchin indicated a report to the House by next Monday is doubtful. Proposals split groups by prewar earnings with 8 and 10 percent deductions for different industries. The panel also considered admin provisions including a three percent unearned income differential and a board to draft legislation.
Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts will deliver the eulogy at the funeral of Senator Jacob H. Gallinger. Services are set for tomorrow at 2 PM at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Concord New Hampshire.
Washington August 20 The licenses of Hermann Mei and George T Wil li master and pilot of the steamer Columbia which sank the fitness river near Peoria in July with heavy loss of life have been revoked. The steamboat service cites inattention to duty incapacity and negligence as the reasons for revocation.
