Kalman Kruber elected to stand trial. They admitted taking a $300 bribe for exemptions. total bribe money was $3,000. Judge Manton said tainted money would not be used as a fine and noted their acts of decency in partial repayment. They receive one week to arrange affairs before transfer.
In the northwest states of Washington Oregon Idaho and Montana peace prevailed while 15000 troops stood by to keep order amid I W W strike threats. A Spokane raid led to the arrest of 27 suspected IWW members with military prisons holding them for inquiry. The war effort prompted Col Dentler to authorize measures and Eugene and Coeur d Alene reports noted troops in the mining district. A Seattle referendum by IWW construction workers was set for September 14.

Archile J. Eley chief of the Los Angeles fire department was indicted by the county grand jury on charges of misappropriating pension money meant for an injured firefighter. Receipts claimed by Eley were unsigned and forged according to the indictment.
German workers in Amoy China were paid off yesterday. Disposal of other central powers’ subjects remains undecided.
The British statement that entente governments will discuss Pope Benedict XV’s peace proposals is read as non formal talks among diplomats. General Petain and General Pershing inspected American troops in France praising training progress and morale. The review of the Chasseur division featured rapid artillery and cavalry displays followed by the Marseillaise and Star Spangled Banner. A silver French airplane flew above while German planes neared the camp and were reportedly downed by French airmen.
