St. Petersburg reports an official position on Chinese neutrality as Japan presses the Port Arthur siege. Despite heavy losses on both sides, authorities claim Port Arthur remains strongly held by General Kuropatkin with about 23 000 Russian troops in a twelve mile area. M Y W Ldninn the Japanese consul at Tien Tin arrived on the British steamer Pechili and said today’s battle began at daybreak along the fortress line. He called it Japan’s supreme effort with Port Arthur likely to be taken, noting outer defenses were already captured and preparations for a grand assault were complete.
The Messenger in St. Petersburg announces widespread reserve mobilization across Poltava Tver Kres and several other governments. The notice lists multiple districts with varying numbers of reserves summoned, including St. Petersburg Archangel and Olonets governments.
Aug. 20 report from Che Foo says Japan intends a three days assault at Port Arthur with a 60000 strong attacking force. Four thousand Japanese reportedly landed at Dalay yesterday. Check of Saturday is not seen as jeopardizing the operation.
Report from St Cha Foo dated Aug 24 41 states Japanese forces before Port Arthur captured fort No. 25, located about one mile from the position. The advance highlights ongoing siege activity in the region during the campaign.
Reports from Che Foo August 21 state that the assault on Port Arthur was unsuccessful but continued last night and today and will persist for another day unless Japanese defenses hold.
In Cripple Creek Colorado on August 20 a crowd of about 2000 men forced 14 union supporters from the city and deported them beyond Canon City. The operatives included Eugene Coley J C Cole and M Holl manager of the Union store. The group warned no return under threat of death or rope.
Tokio declares China’s neutrality status in the Russo Japanese war is imperfect and limited to noncombat zones. Japan respects Chinese neutrality outside war zones only if Russia does likewise, and calls any Russian occupation of neutral Chinese ports a breach. The note cites Chefoo harbor as belligerent and notes renewed neutrality for Port Arthur’s exclusion. Continued on Page Two.
Special to the Morning Journal El Paso Aug 20 A be draggled looking woman held up the Harvey eating house clerk at Deming New Mexico eighty miles west of here. She pistol whipped and forced the clerk to empty the cash drawer taking about 25 dollars before escaping without a clue. Ed Scarborough former Arizona ranger was later arrested on suspicion after the clerk said he resembled the bandit.
A dynamite car exploded on the Missouri Pacific railway near Minden Nevada county killing five people including station agent Brooks and his wife and daughter. Engineer Rhodes and fireman Tod, both of Nevada, were among the dead. A freight train crew was switching when the blast occurred.
A fierce tornado struck St Paul Minnesota and caused widespread destruction. Five dead and two injured were reported with property losses near two million dollars. The Tivol and Empire theatres were destroyed or damaged and the High Bridge suffered severe destruction. In Minneapolis the damage matched St Paul’s, while communication to surrounding areas was cut. The storm lasted about 15 minutes with winds up to 80 miles per hour.
A chaotic scene unfolds as deportees bow and flee amid jeers. A man named W Jtlagine disarms, is struck, and later dies from head wounds. The crowd attacks shops, stocks worth about 22 000 are wrecked, and a delegation targets bond-signers under criminal charges.
In Denver on August 20 Judge Malone denied the bid to remove J. Drehm as receiver of the Fidelity Savings Foundation. The court, noting the fund recently placed in receivership, announced it would appoint a co receiver to operate with Judge Helm.
Pueblo, Aug 20 Coroners Jury reports the Eden train wreck of Aug 7 near Biden station on the Denver & Rio Grande line was caused by railway negligence. Findings fault bridge No 110 for insufficent design and lack of protective measures, noting possible averting actions and missing precautions.
Globe Adz reports a major flood disaster last Wednesday causing six deaths and $26 000 in property loss. Victims include Addison Epfley W K Mitchell and wife Johanna Mitchell Mrs Milla Hurd nee Beassheara Jo rte Moopdy. Five bodies recovered. others were in a Mitchell boarding house near the smelter and could have escaped with heed.
Kansas City Aug 20 Charles a Cc Fales known as Colgate Fales arrested by U S Marshal Durham on a defraudment charge with $3 000 bond. He ran Arthur B Whitlock & Co a grain speculation firm using Rialto Grain Co records seized by the marshal. Cards show 8000 names from across the United States and Canada with many Canadians and states listed.
Washington Aug 26 The secretary of war ordered General Bates to conduct a full inquiry into the clash last night at a camp near Ath eons Ohio in which Corporal Charles Clark was killed and three National Guard members were wounded The action follows press reports before an official report and aims to prevent future incidents between regular army troops and militia by ensuring proper conduct and minimizing risk.
Winfield Kansas Aug 20 United States quarantine officer John Mc Fall arrested Ira Clark a farmer near Maple City charging him with bringing infected Texas cattle into Kansas. Native cattle have been infected by Texas long horns recently smuggled across the quarantine line and officers are determined to stop the practice.
Chaves County Democratic convention in Hoswell New Mexico endorses Jerry Simpson for delegate unanimously. Simp son has now won unani mous support from eastern counties and is seen as certain at the Las Vegas convention opening August 26. President Roosevelt leaves Washington for Oyster Bay aboard a special train at ten this morning and scheduled to arrive at six thirty this afternoon.
