Return of Santa Fe Coast Line Trainmen Ends Coast Strike

The Big Four brotherhood on the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe coast lines has ended its strike. Freight and passenger service will resume immediately. General Manager Hibbard announced word from Needles California that trainmen return to work restoring normal service system wide. Shop craftsmen remain on strike with no terms reached. Embargo on freight lifted with trainmen's return.

Big Four union members end work stoppage in Winslow

In Winslow Arizona on August 19 all members of the Big Four brotherhoods who halted work on August 3 reported for duty at noon. Needles advised workers to return and seniority rights would not be affected. Vice President McKenzie and local chairmen met with leaders in Needles to arrange settlement, with no change to the strike status.

Russia's 1922 crop outlook promises relief for famine

Washington reports that Russia's 1922 bread grain crop is estimated to exceed 1921 famine-year production by at least 5 million tons, enabling the country to feed itself and supply seed grain for 1923. Illinois Athletic Club Dominates Central A A U Track Meet

In El Paso Texas August 19 a pawnshop lent ten dollars on two peacocks claimed to be the finest in the southwest. The pawnbroker fed the birds in-store while the owner, wife of a former wealthy Mexican exile, said wartime conditions forced the pawn. The exiles brought the birds from Mexico five years ago.

Thousands of Fish Die From Gases in Italian Lake

Thousands of eels gray mullets and other fish floated to the surface at Lake Lucrin near Naples after gases from the lake bottom bubbled up killing and cooking the fish. Authorities banned collection fearing poisoning and noted the lake’s historic saltwater status and fame for seafood.
