Venerable head of the Santa Fe Archdiocese receives the pallium in a ceremony attended by a distinguished gathering, marking a high honor from Pope. Archbishop Pitaval presided as dignitaries and church officials observed the investiture.
In Santa Fe nearly 150 clergymen witnessed Archbishop Pitaval of Santa Fe receive the pallium from Bishop Matz of Denver as Bishop Granjon of Tucson and Rev. Father Juillard delivered sermons in English and Spanish. A grand banquet at the Sisters of Loretto academy followed, with Governor Curry and other officials in attendance.
Cardinal Gibbons could not attend the ceremony to invest Jean Baptiste Pitaval as archbishop. Pitaval, born February 10 1848 in Lyons France, served nine years in Colorado missions and Aspen before becoming auxiliary bishop in 1902 and succeeding Archbishop Bourgade last February. He is noted for his strong leadership, six foot stature, and wide regard among clergy and laity.
