The jury acquitted Chicago lawyer Darrow after a verdict delivered in thirty four minutes. The swift result followed the trial of the prominent attorney in a case that drew broad attention in Chicago courts.
Clarence Darrow is found not guilty in the McNamara case bribery trial. The Los Angeles court erupts as jurors hug the acquitted lawyer. Judge Hutton and jury members receive congratulations. Darrow and his wife express relief and plan further legal steps. DA Fredericks declines comment.
The Panama canal bill, passed by both houses, authorizes government administration of the canal and provides free passage for American coastwise vessels and duty free admission of ship building materials to the canal zone. Supporters sing Onward Christian Soldiers as he lectures on public morals and criticizes Taft and Wilson while rallying against judicial decisions and New England senators. He calls Taft a dead issue and refuses to discuss it further. He travels from Providence to Revere Beach then to Beverly and New York.
Citizens of Juarez formed a three member commission to govern with equal voting power as federal troops advance from the southwest. Rail operations repair the destroyed Mexico Northwestern line while a repair train works toward Juarez. The city remains orderly though largely deserted with refugees in El Paso awaiting troop arrival.
Reports from Mazatlan say Americans at the Tominit mine in Sinaloa besieged by rebels and strikers may attempt an overland escape to the coast. Officials state no federal troops can be spared, while the gunboat Denver is due at Mazatlan within days to aid the besieged group, about twenty men.
A letter and telegram from the To minil mine besieged by gunfire dynamite and robbery in Sinaloa asks Governor Colquitt of Texas for immediate help. Signed by J. B. Underwood and three Americans the note calls it an anti foreign rising and notes Mazatlan and Sinaloa officials unable to provide protection.
Reports from Durango indicate a federal victory near Rusigio Durango with thirty five rebels killed and many wounded after a five hour battle. Dispatched to General Hlanquet the news was released through official channels today.
Rebels raided and burned the railroad station at Chicalete ten miles north of Aguas Calientes last night. Station employees were taken captive by the raiders.
Zapatista forces near Toluca, Mexico, appear to have altered plans after a 2,000 strong federal garrison arrived. Reports to General Trujillo say rebels are abandoning towns and moving southward into Guerrero.
About 130 Mexican volunteers from Mexico City under Calixto Contreras were held in barracks after refusing orders to return to Mexico City. Regulars disarmed the force, and they face probable reassignment to the regular army. Rail communication north of Santa Wosalla is cut by a landslide, with rebels rumored in the area.
Columbus New Mexico reports that roughly 200 rebels remain at Palomas Mexico opposite the border town. Colonel Alanis leads about 1,000 troops stretched along a line from Guaman to near the Sonora state line. The cordon aims to intercept General Orogeo and his forces moving toward the Sonora line. No fighting reported at Palomas or southward.
Hundreds of refugees depart western Sonora with about 200 leaving today and 200 more awaiting train space as officials report the surge from Tucson Arizona.
Southern Pacific officials report 800 rebels arrived at La Colorado today and head toward Hernesino the state capital. Federals have not acted.
The Day in Congress notes adjournment after a 4 16 p m session. Congress agreed to seek a further conference on the army appropriation bill and to report the Alaska home rule bill with two houses and a railroad commission. Senator Newlands proposed a joint committee with the president on tariff legislation.
Convened at 16.30 a m the session adopted a resolution to furnish subsistence for Mexican refugees and sent the naval provision back for compromise. The Rules committee barred points of order against the canal measure as it carries free passage of coastwise shipping and duty free shipbuilding materials. A vote on the Howman election challenge was postponed to December. Adjournment set for 8:15 p m.
Rocky Ford Colorado reports that local doctors attribute the deaths of Rev. Gustav A Latzke and his family to ptomaine poisoning from tainted beef bone used in soup. Funeral arrangements are set for tomorrow.
Boulder Colorado August 17 Dr John B Kelley state chemist said he had not finished analyzing stomach contents from Lattke poisoning victims submitted by Coroner T B Wilson of Otero county and could not yet determine the poison type though death is attributed to poisoning. report expected tomorrow to coroner.
An itinerary released tonight outlines Colonel Roosevelt’s September tour through New England to the West Coast, including dates in San Francisco Santa Barbara Los Angeles Phoenix Albuquerque and Santa Fe. A later note from fair officials confirms a September 20 arrival in Albuquerque with exact timing to be announced.
President Taft and Senators Catron and Fall defend Be cundino Romero for United States marshal of New Mexico against charges of a Chicago deal. They assert no agreement divided the delegation and label the accusations as politics. Curry and Roosevelt allies are cited but denied a fixed bargain.
