A mob overpowered the warden at a Georgia prison camp and took the noted prisoner Leo M Frank from the grave site of Mary Phagan, fleeing in an automobile with the captive.
Aug 16 Milledgeville special: a mob estimated from twenty five to seventy five overpowered guards and abducted Leo M. Frank from the Georgia state prison farm. The mob meanwhile cut wires, visited warden Smith and superintendent Burke, and took Frank toward Eaton ton with plans to place his body on Mary Phagan’s grave in Marietta. Sheriff posses ordered city and county forces to pursue. The party had not yet passed through Eatonton by 1:30 am Aug 17.
A German submarine fired several shells at Parton Harrington and Whitehaven in Cumberland on August 16 between 4 36 and 5 20 a m. No material damage or casualties were reported though the railway embankment north of Parton was hit and train service delayed briefly.
Galveston faces a severe tropical storm with winds up to 73 mph. The storm drives high tides and seawater into lower districts, but officials report no loss of life.
A tropical storm battered Galveston with winds 60 to 70 mph at noon rising to 65 73 mph later. The sea wall held, windows shattered, and streets flooded. About 5 000 people evacuated by train and car as the city remained dark and cut off from outside communication.

Dallas Texas August 16 isolation of Galveston after a day of anxious relief efforts heightened suspense. North wind and bay side water suggested to locals a less likely disaster as the sea wall on the south side faced the gulf.

Commander McNamee said no move would occur until the storm abates. Cardozo travels to Washington to confer with Wilson and Lansing on the Mexico situation. Guatemalan minister Dr Juan Ortega and his daughter accompany him after Ortega's expulsion from Mexico City amid Carroanga tensions.
Americans arriving from Mexico report threats by drunken Mexican soldiers accusing Americans of rapes and killings. Carranza officers deny ties to Texas raids and urge calm. An American, Clyde Jobingen, was jailed briefly in Matamoros for an improper bath near military trenches and released.
The second day of the fourteenth annual convention of the American Federation of Catholic Societies in Toledo featured President Joan J. Whalen delivering an address on Peace. He urged Catholic leadership to keep people content with their lot and assure allegiance to country and flag across the nation.
Secretary Daniels announced the battleships Louisiana and New Hampshire are ordered to Vera Cruz to replace gunboats not returning to Progreso. No disorders are expected and the move is precautionary as Carranza and Villa reportedly received the Pan American peace appeal.
