President Harding directs full enforcement of federal railway safety laws as Chairman McChord reports worsening motive power on major carriers amid a strike. He says inspection forces must exert themselves to ensure safety before service is maintained, even if trains run slower.
Hale Holden, president of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy railroad, asserted that motive power on most major lines has shown strict and substantial improvement in recent weeks. He spoke after Chairman McChord of the interstate commerce commission warned about deteriorating motive power based on July reports during the worst conditions.
