Police, gendarmes, and soldiers are slain as bombings and rifle fire terrorize Warsaw and other Polish cities. Reports say dozens dead, 150 wounded, with attackers striking posts and trains, while Tsarist authorities cite 96 sharpshooters using ball cartridges in Krasnoye Selo and related incidents.
Ambush killed a sergeant of the Omerski regiment as officers uncovered a plotting among men. Police misidentified Captain Koek captain of the red guards of Finland, now in Christiana Norway after driving away two pursuing detectives. Armed guards placed on all trains as rail officials face daily hold ups and murders. 369,718 fall recruits have signed up. Guards on trains across the Caucasus and Volga regions require passengers to show identity.
The Imperial Messenger reports wide martial law across the Caucasus except for a few districts as armed bands clash with troops in Shasha and Sangeur. It notes a brigandage trend among some Mohammedan segments, not clearly linked to Pan Islamism or holy war calls.

Anastacio Vigil, a known lumber trader, was struck by lightning four miles from Magdalena while driving a six horse lumber wagon. The bolt killed all six horses and set his clothing ablaze. Vigil was thrown from the wagon and died instantly. His wife and six-year-old son live at the Magdalena area sawmill. Nearby cattle were unharmed.
William Sproule, Freight Traffic Manager of Southern Pacific since 1882, will become traffic chief for the American Smelting Refining Company and allied lines starting October 1. He will oversee vast railroads and steamship routes with holdings across Utah, Colorado, Nevada, Mexico, and South America. Headquarters will be at 71 Broadway, New York, with an estimated salary of 35000 dollars annually.
Brooklyn Rapid Transit officials predict traffic on the Brooklyn trolley roads will run normally by tomorrow or Friday after a dispute over ten cent versus five cent fares to Coney Island. Pittsburg Aug 15 Paul Stensland, former president of the Milwaukee Avenue Bank of Chicago, was seen aboard a Pennsylvania Railroad train at Union Station by Oscar Hilmer. Stensland, believed to be in the east, was identified by Hilmer, a former close friend. Attell defeats Carsey in a featherweight bout in Grand Rapids after 15 rounds.
Dense smoke fills corridors as a blaze rages through a scene described as ugly with guests and employees fleeing in panic. Fire crews battle the flames while several individuals are accounted for, avoiding serious injuries.
A fire broke out under the kitchen filling the servants’ quarters as Cook leaped from a window and suffered a broken leg. Blaze and smoke endangered several lives, with firefighters evacuating the area and extinguishing the flames.

Reports say heat overwhelmed shoppers and several were carried from the 617 Fe M Street store in a frantic stampede for 99 cent goods. Reports from El Paso dated Aug 16 describe a dynamite explosion on a Mexican Central railroad car en route to the Robinson mine at Santa Eulalia. The blast at 4 56 in Chihuahua killed 30 to 50 laborers and bystanders and shattered windows across town. Several American foremen are said to be among the dead.
