Federal authorities say they will handle outbreaks without gloves as the disease progresses. The official tally shows 12 new deaths, 168 total, 55 total cases, 1 018, with 210 total subjects affected and 11 new subjects noted.
In New Orleans intensified yellow fever activity across the city with new cases mainly south of Canal Street and some infection in scattered quarters. Dr White advocates firm action against unreported cases and careless druggists, while Plaquemine parish deals with Italian refugees and cleanup campaigns. Public health measures, anti mosquito enforcement, and Charity Restaurant relief efforts highlight the city’s response.
Washington Aug 14 The internal revenue service conducts a major shake-up with four top agents asked to resign. Captain Charles A Ingram in charge of New Engine work Boston and C Burg who ran the southwest from Texas are among those called for conferences with Commissioner Yerkes. Other two names not learned. Yerkes declines comment as insiders say agents failed to detect certain activities.
Dallas August 14. In light of a recent lynching in Sulphur Springs Texas the Negro Baptist Sunday school and Baptist Young People's Union state convention will be held there instead of the Springs. The executive board cited safety concerns due to local tensions after a black resident was burned.
In Boulder Colorado on August 14 Sheriff Bartell and deputies repelled a jail break when prisoners attacked Undersheriff Thorne during supper. Louis Cinkus awaiting robbery trial was killed and James Rutan wounded as guards opened fire after knives were found in cells. Thorne escaped unharmed.
The Bennington Memorial association in San Diego selected an advisory board at its meeting last night. The list includes President Roosevelt Secretary of the Navy Bonaparte ex Secretary Morton Mies Helen Gould Admirals Goodrich and McCalla Governor Pardee Senators Perkins and Flint and eight California representatives.
Washington August 14 Twenty nine new typhoid fever cases and two deaths were reported to health officers. Officials say the outbreak, though severe, is less than the 1893 peak of 224 patients. House to house inspections in yards and cellars target unsanitary conditions. One bed of the new filtration plant likely opens tomorrow to cut disease risk from unfiltered water.
In Vermont near Bennington a Rutland railroad train struck a touring car carrying Harris Lindsley and Evelyn P. Willing. Lindsley died instantly and Miss Willing died shortly after. The couple had planned to wed next Tuesday. Jeopardized by the crash, the surviving occupants were treated at Soldiers Home hospital. The accident also involved Miss Willing’s relatives and the car was destroyed by fire. Earlier Chicago reports described Miss Willing as society figure and fiancée to Lindsley. Madrid reports note 100000 Andalusian laborers lacking life’s basics amid unrest with landlords fleeing.
Special to the Morning Journal Las Vegas New Mexico August 14 a ten year old boy Gordon Griest shot and killed his sister Alvina while they were alone in the house. The double barreled shotgun was fired and the girl died within minutes. The shooter said he did not know the gun was loaded. Further local items mention jealousy in a separate case and other incidents including theft and baseball notes from Las Vegas.
Gladys Roosevelt sixteen and Eugenie Roosevelt cousins of President Roosevelt were injured in a runaway at Bayville on August 14. Gladys likely fatally injured while Eugenie escaped serious harm.
Northfield VI Aug 14 A total of 650000 in claims by French citizens for damages during Venezuela's 1901 insurrection has been allowed by Referee Frank Plumiley after adjudication. The decision was announced to representatives Count Perle Deishae and Dr Jor De J Paul and is final.
Alan White, age eighteen, of Paris, was swept by a tide while walking on a bench at Pa toes Beach in the Depart ment of the Cote du Nord. He climbed the cliff but fell about one hundred feet to the rocks below. Death was instantaneous.
A northbound Central of Georgia passenger train collided with a freight near Macon on August 14. Two riders died and several were badly injured. Names include Ben Jordan and Joe Hewene y. Wreck blamed on misunderstood orders.
Stated by a Russian official, Japan’s demands are seen as impossible to accept unless modified. Witte hopes for concessions but balks at indemnity and territory, while Russia asserts strength in Korea and Manchuria. Peace depends on Japan showing genuine willingness to negotiate.
Portsmouth August 14 Russia and Japan reach accord on three articles in peace talks. Russia recognizes Japan's special position in Korea but with no sphere of influence, commits to evacuate Manchuria, and agrees to cede the Chinese Eastern railroad from Harbin to China. Negotiations continue with two other articles unresolved.
