Amoy, China August 12 AP reports General Ong commanding Chen Chiung Ming s forces in Fukien plans to seize Amoy with about 10000 soldiers moving from Changchow and Shihma. Que fears civilian harm while artillery positions Sengsu to cover Amoy. Earlier fighting near Chang Chow left 6000 killed or wounded and many prisoners taken.
Austin Texas Aug 19 details for the recognition of Mexico by the United States were complete and awaited the return of President Harding when he was stricken in San Francisco. Reports brought here by N Norris chairman of the Texas board of water engineers from Mexicans in Pass say the recognition pact had been completed and presented to President Obregon for signature. The Mexican president wished Harding to sign first, delaying final action until his return to Washington.
Chicago August 12 Ralph de Palma the famous racing driver was injured when the car of Louis Chevrolet hit his machine at Hawthorne dirt track during a 24 mile race. Several spectators were hurt including one with a broken toe. De Palma was taken to a hospital after being knocked into a fence. Other races on the card included five, ten, fifteen and twenty five mile events with Howdy Wilcox finishing the 25 mile restart. De Palma also won two five mile races and the 15 mile event, while Joe Boyer and Leon Duray won other races at average speeds reported.
Hamburg reports a wildlife market with giraffes at about 5000 dollars, hippos from 2500 to 5000, and lions around 1250 each amid postwar scarcity. John Hagenbeck seeks British permission to move German catchers to India to repatriate tigers and visit the Maharaja of Gwalior, who earlier received eight lions.
In Greeley Colorado a Union Pacific gasoline car struck a stalled automobile killing Mrs Belle D Sibley and Mrs Horace Beb Williams. Williams daughter Miss Williams suffered a fractured skull and died soon after. Sibley died instantly. Williams died later at hospital.
Delmonte California Aug 12 James Ross Curran 19 son of Rose Amber Curran of San Mateo died and Charles Crocker 19 son of W H Crocker San Francisco banker was injured when a car driven by Crocker left the road at Death curve near Moss Landing in fog. The vehicle overturned twice, tossing the youths clear.
E D Menoud driving grapes from De Bremond vineyard east of Toswell to Hagerman was struck by another car. The collision tore two wheels from Menouds car and threw him a considerable distance, but he sustained only slight injuries. The other driver reportedly did not stop to inspect the damage. Menoud formerly resided at Hagerman.
A wireless telegraph company granted exclusive rights to conduct traffic between Africa and other countries for 30 years will begin erecting stations in Austria immediately. The parent capital is connected with the Marconi Wireless Telegraph company of London and the Austrian government. Operations to start early next calendar year.
