Paris reports unanimous French cabinet support for M Herriot's Dawes Plan program. The plan aims to evacuate authorities from Ruhr tensions and push German compliance, with Herriot seeking London's backing and a congressional vote on his concessions.
A late afternoon cyclone leveled the Henry Kuns farm four miles east of Thurman Colorado killing nine people and seriously injuring five others. Doctors from Flagler and Akron rushed to the scene to hospitalize the injured at Akron. The dead include four Loder children Mrs Kane and two Kups children and Rev Amos Burkey plus Fred Garret. Injured were Loder and Burkey families and two unnamed others. Local reports say Thurman was nearly wiped out and communication was hampered as the storm moved east toward Denver region. The coroner handled the bodies at the scene.
Detroit dispatch reports Royo M. Harrop, vice presidential nominee of the People's Progressive Party, demanding Henry Ford be on Nebraska ballots as the party's presidential candidate. Harrop objects to La Follette and Butler being listed and cites Ford’s endorsement in Nebraska primaries and La Follette's stance on the Ku Klux Klan as grounds for concern.
Senator George TH Moses of New Hampshire says Coolidge will win in November with strong eastern support. He predicts Coolidge carries New Hampshire and New York by margins, notes La Follette drains socialist and Democrat votes, and cites ballot name counts at Dover and Wisconsin. He expects a large Coolidge majority overall.
Artesia New Mexico announces the annual Alfalfa Festival and Rose Carnival for October 1. The Artesia Chamber of Commerce is arranging new attractions and amusements to entertain the expected large crowds. The event is described as the most prominent in the section each year.
Theodore Roosevelt Jr along with Senator Watson and Representative Johnson joined the Republican national speakers corps. Roosevelt signaled he will join New York campaigning efforts while Watson plans his first speech at Sheffield on August 22 and Johnson will dedicate most of his time to the campaign in his home state.
Santa Fe August 10 United States Senator H Bursum said in an interview that a Albuquerque newspaper report claiming he dislikes Albuquerque and that the state convention might be held elsewhere is ludicrous. He noted his office is there and said he is not opposed to Albuquerque as convention city and would be satisfied if the convention is held there. He refuted suggestions the Republican state central committee might base representation on 1920 votes rather than 1922 results and emphasized harmony among Republicans statewide as New Mexico trends strongly Republican.
The July Cherry Circle article by Louis Geyler describes an auto trip from Albuquerque to Taos via Domingo and Santa Fe with illustrations of Taos dawn scenes and the Taos old church. Louis Clifford in Chicago received a copy. the piece aims to boost New Mexico tourism.
Mrs. Charlotte Tex of Hollywood filed a $50,000 suit against Police Chief August Vollmer of Berkeley for breach of promise to marry and seduction. Police surgeons confirmed an attempted suicide by ingesting poison and inhaling gas. She was treated at a receiving hospital and will recover.
Raton New Mexico August 10 The Eureka well at 11 miles south of Raton has drilled down 3206 feet through difficult conditions as crews push toward a productive depth. Local reports describe challenging rock and high effort in the operation.
A Roswell fishing tale describes diversions of local fishermen who slow walk streams to lure catfish and pull large fish from their gills. Reportedly up to 200 pounds of catfish were caught in a single afternoon with fish weighing as much as 85 pounds.
Reykjavik August 10 The next leg of the American world flight will not be attempted until all options are considered and the best decision is made. Admiral Magruder says weather and safety may determine the path, with Labrador as the likely next objective. The Raleigh reports no ice off Greenland as Lt. Smith eyes three possible routes including Ivigtut or Angmagsalix harbor for refueling.
On Talita Island in Laguna de Bay a dynamite magazine exploded this afternoon destroying the magazine building and nearby barracks. Two soldiers died and several children were injured. debris scattered up to a quarter mile. A relief party from the Los Banos naval radio station treated the injured.
New York reports show profit taking and modest industrial improvement in the past week amid easy money. The Federal Reserve Bank cut rediscount rate to 3 percent, signaling no urgent rate firming. Steel output rose slightly, grain movement increased, and oil prices dipped on oversupply.
In Clarksbury West Virginia crowds welcome John W Davis ahead of his formal nomination acceptance where he will outline campaign plans and introduce his campaign marshal Clem L Shaver. Davis visited Central Press offices and Christ Episcopal Church with three sisters present. He will meet Democratic leaders tomorrow afternoon at his home.
