An empty crepe hung pew at Calvary Baptist marks the passing of the churchs most illustrious parishioner. The vacant seating recalls President Roosevelts worship during his capital era and underscores the local loss felt by congregants.
Marion Ohio August 9 Associated Press Warren Harding returned home to his boyhood town for a final homecoming carried by guardsmen and crowds. Cabinet members and Mrs Harding followed the funeral train from San Francisco to Marion where the nation paid tribute to the late president.
Chief Robert Henderson of the Albuquerque fire department ordered five water proof tarpaulins to cover stock or furniture in fires to prevent water damage. The 12 by 14 foot canvas tarpaulins weigh about twenty pounds and will be used where water exposure is high but buildings may be saved. They are sold by Fulton Bag and Cotton and aid in rapid deployment without delaying firefighting. The department will also carry brooms and saw dust to clean up after fires.
Santa Fe Aug 9 The state faces a severe tax shortfall as valuations dip from 405 million in 1929 to an estimate near 300 million for 1923. The State Tax Commission concedes it cannot fully equalize values and warns of revenue losses if assessments reflect actual value. The report notes drought losses, mining and railroad valuation issues, and potential oil lease reductions that threaten public schools and state institutions.
Work starts next Monday on Huerta Canyon road from Pla eltas to Ellie ranch, done by Forest Service with a 12 man crew led by H H Crow. Tasks include rock removal, smoothing high centers, and grading adjustments to restore passable auto travel. A Sandoval County meeting August 15 will decide maintenance funds, with an expected minimum of 1900. Camping areas in Huerta canyon are drawing more visitors as the road improves.
Denver Ave predicts Friday partly cloudy with scattered showers in the north, warmer in the north central area. Saturday looks partly cloudy. Arizona forecasts Friday unsettled with scattered local showers and warmer eastern areas. Saturday should be fair.
Conditions for the past 24 hours show a high of 83 degrees and a low of 61 with a mean around 73. Humidity near 28 percent and precipitation near 0.06 inches. Winds from the southwest with partly cloudy character.
Two of the climbers were Alpine guides when they vanished into space during ascent of a peak in Chamonix France. Other guides witnessed the fall and alerted authorities as a search begins.
Dublin August 9 Count Plunkett republican leader and Roscommon deputy was released from the military internment camp at County Kildare. He was arrested last April while traveling with Miss Mary MacSwiney to Liam Lynch’s funeral at Clonmel. No other releases were reported.
The Episcopal Church arranged a memorial service for the late President Warren G Harding to be conducted at 10 o’clock this morning in St Johns Cathedral by Archdeacon Ziegier. Bishop Howden has issued a special prayer for use in diocese services during the memorial rites.
President Coolidge speeds to Marion Ohio to attend Warren Harding funeral services. He will join a distinguished March of mourners including Chief Justice Taft General Pershing and numerous senators governors and military leaders. The trip follows the late statesman’s solemn burial in Washington and leads to Coolidge’s return to the capital.
The Grunsfeld Brothers building at First Street and Gold Avenue, once a landmark of Santa Fe’s mercantile life, was sold to Mrs Lou ise V Stover. Grunsfeld dry goods ceased operations about a year ago after Ivan Grunsfeld retired. The firm originated in Santa Fe in 1846 and moved to Old Albuquerque before settling at the current site. Mr and Mrs Grunsfeld and their two daughters plan a year abroad. Mrs Stover, purchasing as an investment, has no immediate plans for the property.
New York publishers decide to suspend all evening editions tomorrow as a tribute to the late president to be laid to rest at Marion Ohio. Papers not published include the Evening Post Evening World Sun Globe Evening Telegram Mail Journal Brooklyn Eagle and the New York Herald. The Cincinnati Times Star will publish one edition and hold memorial services in the composing room after printing.
Albuquerque observes a national day of sorrow with widespread business shutdowns. Post office and government offices close. many stores suspend operations. Three memorial services are held at the Immaculate Conception Church at 9 a.m., the Woman’s Club at 11 a.m., and the High School auditorium at 3 p.m. The day features a coordinated program by the Elks and local patriotic organizations.
Mayor L N Jones issues a proclamation for a citywide day of mourning and prayer in Alamogordo New Mexico on Friday. Public offices and businesses to close. Memorial services by the American Legion at the auditorium at 11 oclock with Rev A I Porter delivering the principal address.
Six car loads of flowers and tributes arrive in Marion from Washington in mourning for the late president. The shipment marks a national expression of sympathy as residents prepare for small ceremonies and local remembrances.
District Attorney Garcia and officials met to discuss gathering evidence to convict gambling prostitution and liquor law violators in Bernalillo County. No progress due to absence of county commissioners. another meeting will be scheduled. Frank Butt said funds beyond existing appropriations would not be approved.
Rev. George M. Landis, about 32, will conduct the funeral services for President Harding in Marion. He arrived two years ago as an evangelist at Trinity Baptist Church, later becoming assistant pastor and then pastor after Thomas R. McAfee's death.
Santa Fe August 8 Judge D J Leahy resigns from the state game and fish commission announced by Governor Hinkle. No reason is given. Leahy was appointed for a two year term and the governor has not yet accepted the resignation. A Republican will be appointed to replace him upon acceptance.
Florence Kling Harding faced bereavement with quiet strength as she awaited her husband’s burial in Marion Ohio. She spoke little of the future to visitors, thanked well wishers, and plans to live in Marion at her brother’s house while considering travel and Europe, with medical advisers guiding decisions.
