Dispatch from Paris reports Italian forces capture Gorizia after three days of intense combat. Aerial and ground assaults, reinforcements through an underground passage, and a new bomb-throwing instrument aid a decisive breakthrough. Remaining establishments face more stringent costs and liquor stocks face disposal.
Philadelphia publishers meeting to address severe newsprint shortages agree to reduce all daily and Sunday editions to eighty pages weekly. Beginning September 1 unsold copies will no longer be distributed to newsboys and dealers. Major Pennsylvania papers join the plan to curb output as mills fail to supply normal white paper stocks.

A Stickney founder of the Chicago Great Western Railway died at his St Paul home this morning after a week of illness. He was 76, born in Maine, who built multiple railroads and led the Chicago Great Western until his 1908 resignation. Family and friends were at his bedside.
