The U S Trade Commission releases its public report detailing conditions found in the nation’s meat packing plants. The document argues for federal control of the entire meat industry and outlines factors influencing production and competition.
The Federal Trade Commission urges the president to nationalize stockyards, cold storage plants, warehouses, and both refrigerator and cattle cars to dismantle what it calls a five firm meat packing monopoly. It faults Swift Armour Morris Wilson and Cudahy for manipulating markets, restricting supplies, inflating prices, defrauding producers and consumers, and securing rail and urban privileges. The report also notes international reach into Argentina Brazil Uruguay and other countries, plus extensive control over by products and related industries.
