Rescue steamer Anyox reports picking up 96 passengers and 70 crew from the sunken Alaska off Eureka California. Captain Snoddy says 36 passengers and 32 crew are missing with no confirmed additional survivors.
Chairman Lasker selects William J. Love of New York and A. J. Frey of Los Angeles for the Emergency Fleet Corporation operating board. Love served as director of trades and allocations. Frey led the ship construction division for the Southern Pacific district of the shipping board.
Deputy Sheriff Neln of Los Angeles arrives to extradite Arthur Burch in the Kennedy murder case. Burch admits identity and says he will return without extradition. Miller of El Paso Texas was arrested in Denver after $5 066 in narcotics were seized at a downtown barber shop where he allegedly distributed them The charges allege he purchased narcotics in Mexico and smuggled them across the border Two accomplices are in custody and Miller requests an immediate hearing before U S Commissioner Robert K Foot A $2600 bond was posted in default and he was jailed awaiting the preliminary hearing.
In Lawrence Kansas work has begun on the University of Kansas stadium and athletic field. The project has more than 600000 subscribed and aims for completion in time for the KU Missouri football game this fall. The complex will include a football field baseball diamond a quarter mile running track and seating for 22006.
