German lines report action in both Somme and Verdun sectors as French troops push forward between Hemwood and the river and south of the Thiaumont works.
Rains turn the countryside into a quagmire as Russian forces renew a strong push against German lines in northern Galicia and along the Sereth and Stokhod corridors. In Verdun and Somme sectors French and British actions yield limited gains while Austrians and Italians clash on the Isonzo front and near Monte Sabotini. Turkish reports claim gains against Russians and a setback for British forces near the Suez canal.
French War Office reports repulse of German assaults at Thiaument and in the Vaux and Chapitre woods near Verdun. Official note notes heavy fighting north of the Somme and in the Chauines area.
London reports determined German assaults on British lines north and northeast of Pozieres this morning were repulsed. Germans briefly entered the lines at one or two points but were driven out, according to the British official statement issued tonight.

In Paso, Texas, Aug 7, Battery A of the Massachusetts National Guard nicknamed the millionaire battery voted to stay on the border rather than muster out, keeping student companies active until state troops are recalled. Every member except one is Harvard trained with one from Princeton. The order affecting student units takes effect September 1.
New York August 7 The visible grain supply in the United States rose for wheat by 3 272 000 bushels and corn by 968 000 bushels while wheat and oats in bond increased. Oats fell 344 000 bushels and rye rose 133 000 bushels with barley up 146 000 bushels and barley in bond up 157 000 bushels.
George W. W. Hanger of the United States board announces that the Switchmen's Union of North America and the railroads have agreed to settle differences by arbitration under the Newlands act. The dispute mirrors demands from the four brotherhoods for an eight hour day and overtime pay. The union has about 6,000 members.
A Morning Journal Special describes British air fleets over the Somme, with aviators bombarding Henri Lietard near Arras and Martinpuich, fires rising 4 000 feet as planes storm trenches and depots. Reports claim overwhelming air power supports ground offensives with multiple craft in action daily.
Nogales Arizona August 7 Van Goetham a Catholic priest was arrested and detained crossing the Mexican border to comfort a dangerously ill Mexican woman summoned for religious aid but released shortly after through U S Const Simpich efforts The priest said he crossed the public plaza of the Mexican town and announced his plan to speak with Secretary Lansing.
