Colonel Oscar Kestmond longtime superintendent of the Dayton Soldiers Home is shot dead by Edward Leonard a fellow veteran Leonard then wounds two others in separate rooms citing jealousy over recent appointments The incident ends with guards arresting Leonard and all victims receiving medical attention He was a Civil War veteran and former First North Carolina infantry leader.

Washington August 7 The senate committee on irrigation will begin inspecting lands in the northwest where reclamation projects are under way. Members will assemble in Chicago Billings Mont on August 15 with Interior Secretary Ballinger and Reclamation Service Director Newell joining aboard the mission.

Sacramento al. Aug. The discovery a few days ago of an authenticated case of bubonic plague in Sunol Alameda county has inspired the state board of health to renew activity in the campaign against the ground squirrel in that and adjacent areas.
Counties report Joseph Mendoesa ill with plague at Alameda Hospital after handling infected squirrels killed by him last week. Thousands of squirrels have been culled by hunters under the United States Marine Hospital Service, with bacteriological tests confirming plague among them but not at alarming levels.
