Police say Rice’s movements were watched yesterday evening and assassins lay in wait at multiple spots after he left the Euclid club.
After twenty hours of police work the case remains unsolved. William L. Rice, prominent lawyer and millionaire, was found dead near his home with gunshot wounds, blunt force trauma, and a knife slash. Police suspect revenge by a tall golf caddy once involved in a dispute. Two foreigners were seen near the scene as a reward of 5000 dollars is posted for the killers. An associate, William Nelson Cromwell, is reportedly en route from New York amid the tragedy.
Miss Inez Wilson testified she was at Dr. William F. Michaelis office until shortly before his murder and left with him. Police doubt robbery motive and consider revenge or jealousy. another Michaelis drowning noted elsewhere in city.
Louis Aus 6 W Lee grand president of the Order of Railway Trainmen reports talks with A H Garreteon of the Kalikoana Conductors and 150 delegates west of the Illinois Central. Sessions discuss wage hikes and an eight hour day. Trainmen favor a 20 percent raise while conductors seek mileage pay. Conference ends tomorrow.
Beverly Massachusetts August 6 Representative W B McKinley of Massachusetts chairman of the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee forecast a Republican victory in the next House. He predicted reclaiming districts in Indiana Massachusetts New York and Lovering and Perkins districts while tying campaign to the party’s tariff record and the president’s leadership.
Raymond Nally of Bird's Point was shot dead by neighbor Lee Whalen who was brought to Charleston and released on a 500 bond. Whalen reportedly told Constable Brown a tale of domestic trouble after the shooting.
Denver real estate agent Harry Pike was sentenced to fourteen years in the penitentiary after pleading guilty to attempted murder in the May 21 shooting of Miss Maezelle Kitter. Miss Kitter wept in court as the sentence was announced. Pike's two sons, ages 11 and 8, were in Denver with him and later went to live with their mother in Chicago.
Quebec August 6 Miss Leneve in the Elmore murder case reached a commercial stage as a New York manager telegrammed offering 1000 dollars per week for an indefinite vaudeville engagement to start upon her release from prison if she is freed.
Camp Perry Ohio August 6 Range officers assigned by the War Department for duty at the national rifle tournament were instructed to avoid profanity and sing in conducting the major shooting event.
Des Moines reports one third of Iowa babies under one year died this summer per G. H. Summer secretary of the Iowa State board of health. Causes cited include cholera infantum juvenile paralysis malnutrition and neglect. A special health bulletin will be issued next week advising proper child care.

In New York on Madison Avenue and 42nd Street a stick of dynamite lay in the gutter for over an hour. Wealthy residents and passersby at the business corner never realized the danger until the threat ended. No one knows how the device got there.
In Columbus Ohio Aug 6 a conference of military and city officials decided not to release state troops from strike duty after last evening’s attempts to blow up two street cars. The cars carried only crew and escaped injury. The Carmen's union through its attorney urged Governor Harmon to call a special session to revoke the Columbus Railway and Light Company franchise.
Joseph Wendling, accused of killing Alma Kellner in Louisville, resumed the trip to Kentucky in custody of Chief John B. Carney. In Denver he faced little questioning, with officers noting his cheerful demeanor as crowds watched and Wendling proclaimed his innocence.
Crippen and Miss Le Neve will spend their first Sunday in prison with separate chapel services if they wish. The standard prison meals are oatmeal gruel for breakfast and dinner and bread and water for supper, with meat and potatoes on weekdays. Crippen has enough funds to buy four quarts of milk daily, and the girl’s health warrants more elaborate food than the usual menu.
A stage driver on the Silver City Mogollon line was robbed and shot by road agents for the second time in three weeks. The incident halted service as authorities investigate the assault and theft.

Japanese prisoner in Denver jail claims a white man forced him to help hide Mrs. Catherine Wilson’s body in a basement box after her May 7 killing. He describes a bloodied man directing the disposal and says the crime occurred in the cellar, with neighbors' sounds mistaken for a neighbor.
