Three hundred passengers go down as the Italian steamer strikes a rocky reef off the Spanish coast. The captain is blamed for the disaster and kills himself. Fishermen lose lives during the attempt to rescue passengers. Survivors are in deplorable condition.
The Italian steamer Sirle wrecked near Hormigas Island with about 800 aboard. Some 300 immigrants, many Italians and Spaniards, drown or abandon ship. Survivors crowded Cape Palos in dire need as fishermen attempt rescues amid chaos. The captain reportedly killed himself. a Brazilian archbishop was among those missing.
Passengers fought for life boats amid chaos as the steamer sank at Cartagena. Several crew members were killed or wounded and many emigrants died or were injured in the brutal scramble for lifeboats. The captain shot himself as rescue efforts failed. Lola Milanes rumored among the drowned.

Morgan poses for photographers Rockefeller jokes with reporters while Rogers chats about politics and business. Reginald Vanderbuilt calls Morgan delightful. Jamaica Bay harbor plans surface as harbor congestion prompts talks with federal and local officials.

In Tonopah Nevada on August 6 Stuart Burney a prosperous teamster was killed in the corral of the Head Night stable near the depot and John Kemman another teamster was fatally beaten. Both attacked with a gas pipe and robbery is the probable motive Burney had several hundred dollars last night Burney arrived from Manhattan with Leo Swart and Lowney Pennett Swart slept under Burney’s wagon and was arrested declaring he knows nothing Kemman’s skull is fractured Burney’s clothes were stripped from his body and found down the track with pockets rifled
Omaha Nebraska August 5 Senator J H Millard has received an invitation from President Roosevelt to join the presidential party on a visit to Panama City. The invitation was extended as part of Roosevelts Caribbean and Central American tour planning.
A letter from William H Taft to United States Senator J H Millard of Omaha requests Millard join a presidential observing party to Panama in November to personally inspect the canal work. Taft notes Millard's role as senate committee chairman and asks about his available engagement.
Illinois returns show Shelby M. Cullom leading for the U S Senate nomination with a roughly five thousand vote edge over former Governor Yates. In Chicago complete returns credit J T McDermott with a plurality for the Democratic congressional nomination.
Paris Aug 5 It is probable a duel will be fought tomorrow between General Andre former minister of war and General DeNegrir. Statements in Andre memoirs about DeNegrir have been denied by DeNegrir. The principals have chosen seconds but details remain unsettled.
John Carle, a homeless youth, attacked traveling salesman William C. Pearson on West Twenty third Street, stabbing him as passersby intervened. He fled but was captured. the knife broke with three inches left in Pearson. Carle claimed hunger drove him and was committ ed to Bellevue hospital for mental examination.
Cold Springs Texas Aug 5 sheriff asked Governor to send state rangers after yesterday's election violence that left B Adama and his brother Sam Adams dead and several wounded Alf Carnes was shot in error for Robinson C L Williamson returned home in Sheppard and heard a rumor of a Robinson kin seeking him.
