The property spans a hundred acres in alfalfa with modern buildings an orchard large pastures and extensive field crops. Charles Cunningham son of the former owner managed the farm which has stood for thirty years.
Allied forces press the German withdrawal across the Vesle and Aisne fronts as Pershing reports American troops have taken thousands of prisoners and 133 guns. Vismes depot falls. French advance along the Vesle and toward Rheims reduces German threat. Battles spread to Amiens area with British and French pressure and Italian front activity lauding Austrian defeats.
London dispatch notes British navy salvage crews have restored more than 4600 sunken merchant vessels in under three years. A U S tanker and British ship laden with oil were salvaged after collisions and mine damage, with about 16,000 tons of oil aboard the tanker salvaged. Damages are valued at hundreds of thousands in today’s marine accounting.
Dr Sun Yat sen, in Tokyo, says southerners may accept a peace proposal if it guarantees a permanent end to the Chinese civil war. He doubts success while Premier Tuan remains in power and suggests the south could seek financial relief in Japan. He emphasizes sentiment as the key to any entente.
Allied dispatch from Aug 4 reports villages along the Aisne Marne front where Germans used churches as hospitals leaving sixty beds and dead and wounded in Villeneuve parish. In another village German troops stored brass and copper church vestments and household hardware boxed for shipment to Germany after retreat.

The German forces on the British front appear to shift from offensive to defensive posture. They execute a local retirement in the Albert sector to the east bank of the Ancre, signaling a pause in offensive actions for the near term.
The steel cargo carrier Invincible, 12,000 tons, was launched in Oakland harbor from the Alameda yard of Bethlehem Ship Building Corp. The yard set a world record for speed of construction at twenty eight days, with fifteen hundred workers and credit given to foremen James Gregg and James Kearman. The launch coincided with four hulls, including the Defiance, and follows swift builds at the Alameda yard across 1918. The Invincible measures 440 feet, 56 feet beam, 38 feet depth, and sails at eleven knots when loaded.
A 69 year old man testified as a witness in a local trial that he is the father of thirty five children from three marriages. He reported twenty five living offspring and that five sons are serving in France or training camps, with thirteen sons in military service.
