At Long Beach California an electric train collided with an automobile carrying Osgood Pell and his chauffeur killing Pell outright and injuring William Laimbeer and his wife Natalie Laimbeer amid dramatic wreckage. Mrs Pell and a friend were treated nearby. The accident followed a Nassau hotel dinner hosted by William K Vanderbilt Jr. The Pell party had recently been active in New York and Newport society.

Harry G. Elliott a 35 year old lithographer and his 26 year old companion Miss Ellen Sibley evaded a police pursuit at a New York boarding house then went to Levers leap in Macombs Thom park where Elliott shot Sibley and then killed himself a note signed by both stated they wished to die together to avoid parting. Elliott and Sibley had come from Chicago two weeks earlier. Mrs. Elliott later reported she could not locate them.
Porter Charlton charged with the murder of his wife in June 1901 at Lake Como Italy will be taken from Hudson County jail on August 13 to stand trial in Italy. Italian detectives expected to reach New York about August 5. Charlton's father Paul Charlton former U S judge in Porto Rico likely to sail with him. Glasgow Aug 3 The Mavis valley pit of the Cudder colliery twelve miles from here caught fire, twenty three miners entombed.
