President Harding confronts the rail strike surge as railway chiefs reject the administration plan on seniority. White House holds details, awaiting labor talks in Chicago while cautioning publicity may hinder delicate talks amid coal shortages and potential government action.
Glenn T Plumb counsel for sixteen large railroads and author of the famed Plumb plan died tonight in Washington. Heart disease caused his death after several months of illness.
Special correspondence reports orders to start work on the New Episcopal mission and hospital near Farmington New Mexico. Bishop Howden of Albuquerque, who spent several days there, indicates excavation began Monday with Indians to haul rocks. The building will cost about $15,000 and lie near the San Juan river by the recently drilled water well.

Chicago faced a city wide walkout of 25 000 street car and elevated road workers halting all electric transportation. Motor traffic filled streets as police managed congestion with one way loops while accidents injured several and one man died while boarding a jitney. Authorities estimate 150 000 cars plus steam rail and pedestrians carried the normal 2 040 000 daily transit patrons.

J L Cox a machinist recently employed by the Denver and Rio Grande Western railway in Pueblo was attacked and beaten by three men while walking up Santa Fe avenue between Third and Fourth streets. Gertrude Therle of the New York Women's Swimming Association won the 3 1/2 mile international race off Long Island in 61 minutes 34 3 5 seconds. Helen Wainwright finished second and Hilda James of Britain placed third.

New York August 1 The Associated Press rail executives rejected the presidents plan to settle the rail strike insisting they cannot reinstate strikers with unimpaired seniority and warning that no settlement without seniority protections is acceptable. They would operate with forces gathered since July 1.
Roswell New Mexico Aug 1 Col J W Willson superintendent of the New Mexico Military Institute died after a paralysis strike Sunday night. He built the school into a renowned institution with strong ties to veterans affairs and the military. Survived by his daughter and wife Lottie Pruit. death follows long service and state education roles.
The department of agriculture places this year's cotton crop at 11 449 000 bales of 600 pounds gross weight in the second forecast, based on July 25 condition at 70.8 percent of normal. State readings range from Virginia 80 to California 85, with declines since June 25 and 7.1 percent of acreage abandoned by July 1.
Washington Aug 1 AP A plan for procedure under which the government emergency fuel control machine will be operated was completed at a central coal committee meeting chaired by Henry BR Spencer. The plan to be sent to Secretary Hoover tomorrow would enable federal distribution to become effective and include regional committee personnel as agents of the central board to combat profiteering and ensure ready fuel distribution.
Judge Colin Neblett of the U S district court postponed until 9 AM tomorrow the hearing to show cause on the temporary restraining order signed July 22 to restrain the Federated Shop Crafts from interfering with trains on the El Paso & Southwestern system. The hearing had been set for 2 PM today in Santa Fe.
