Former Indiana governor Jed Hanly a 1916 prohibition candidate and Dr. C M Baker of Kilgore Ohio along with their host and hostess died when a Pennsylvania freight struck their car six miles from Jefferson on a morning trip to Kilgore. Hanly was en route to Carton for an address.
Ja nk Hanly born April 4 in Champaign County Illinois rose from log cabin origins to Indiana politics. He served in the Indiana Senate and U S Congress, formed a law partnership, led prohibition efforts as head of the Flying Squadron, founded a foundation in 1915, and published the National Journal and Indianapolis Commercial. He ran for president on the Prohibition ticket in 1916 and fought notable Supreme Court cases on the constitutional national prohibition amendment.
Chicago reports the Prohibition Party mourns the death of Jak Hanly, governor. W. G. Hinshaw, chairman of the Prohibition National committee, notes Hanly’s early 16 year rise on a county option platform and his long advocacy. Hanly helped shape the party’s policy and tour history.

San Diego Calif August 1 Members of a Russian colony at Guadalupe on the highway between Tia Juana and Ensenada Lower California have been impressed into the service of Governor Cantu to assist in transporting rifle and machine gun ammunition from Mexicali to Ensenada where troops of the Mexican de facto government are expected to land in a movement against Cantu according to reports from passengers on a motor ship that left Ensenada last night.
The Universal Negro Improvement Association began its first convention in New York to elect a world leader and a national leader for 12,000,000 African Americans, with a provisional president for Africa. A constitution and a pamphlet titled rights in the name of the negro will be adopted, per Marcus Garvey. The convention runs through August 31.
Washington officials call on voters to examine public records of all candidates and reject those unfriendly to agriculture. The appeal comes from Charles S. Barrett, chairman of the National Board of Farm Organizations and president of the National Farmers Union.
