Present taxes rise in new measure affecting tobacco sales and leisure venues. The revenue bill doubles taxes on tobacco, theaters, billiard and pool halls, bowling alleys, and related amusements, reshaping local consumer costs.
Washington aug 1 The house ways and means committee framed an 8 000 600 000 revenue bill proposing a 1 percent tax on retail sales by mail order houses over 100 000 annual business and uniform 8 percent levies on Pullman seats berths and passenger rates The measure also hikes taxes on tobacco brokers theaters amusements pawnbrokers ship brokers and stock exchange dues while doubling other excise taxes to raise about 1 6 9 000 000 000 in revenue.
